A rescue team saved a spectacled cobra that had swallowed a kitchen knife in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. The cobra, while reportedly searching for food inside a house, swallowed the knife mistaking it for prey.
The incident occurred at a residence belonging to Govinda Naik in Hegde Village, about 4 km from the sub-district headquarters of Kumta Taluk. Reportedly, a kitchen knife had fallen to the floor and the cobra mistook the blade for food and swallowed it completely.
The knife measured approximately 12 inches in length and 2 inches in width. A video showed the cobra struggling to move as the knife was lodged deep inside its body.
When Naik realised what had happened, he contacted snake rescuer Pavan, who arrived at the scene accompanied by veterinary assistant Advaith Bhat.
Pavan and Advaith worked together to capture and save the snake.
Another video showed how the team first caught the snake and placed it in a brown bag before beginning the extraction procedure. The rescue required careful coordination between the two men.
During the extraction process, one held the snake securely while ensuring its mouth remained open. The other carefully pulled the knife out of the cobra’s throat.
Once the blood-covered knife was removed from the snake’s throat, the cobra was able to move around freely again. The team then provided necessary treatment to ensure the snake did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.
After confirming the cobra was in good health, it was released back into the wild.
