These days, Adidas’ most popular thin-soled sneakers include retro models such as the Samba and Taekwondo, but the brand will soon dip into its archives for an even more vintage reissue that’s arriving at select retailers now.

Adidas’ latest slim-sole sneaker rerelease dates all the way back to 1959 with the first launch of the Italia model. Introduced long before thin soles were fashionable, the Adidas Italia features a malleable leather upper with serrated overlays, rubber outsoles and gold foil branding. One of the Italia’s signature design cues is its criss-crossed serrated overlays at the heel, which form an X shape. Presented in a Core White/Green/Cream White colorway, this Italia reissue brings to mind other Adidas classics such as the Stan Smith.

Staying true to its Italia name, this rerelease of the model is handcrafted in Italy. Adidas has in recent years given premium Italian-made upgrades to brand staples including the Samba and Gazelle, but the releases are few and far between and come with higher-than-usual price tags.

While not as widely known as the aforementioned Samba, the Adidas Italia is a significant piece of the brand’s legacy. Along with the brand’s Rom sneaker, the Italia was worn as an all-purpose sports by athletes during the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. The Italia has been reissued sporadically in the decades since, but this is the first time a rerelease has been given the premium made-in-Italy treatment. A modified version of the shoe, known as the Italia 70s, is available now through Adidas.

Whether purists who are looking for a true-to-form version of the original Rome Olympics sneaker or new fans who want some variety in their thin-soled sneaker rotation, the Adidas Italia ’60 Made in Italy is sure to have a diverse audience. With a retail price of $349, the sneaker has a style code of JR8377 and will be released June 17 from retailers including End.
