In a major redesign, Apple is updating the design language it uses for software in all its devices, including the iPhone and Mac. At WWDC 2025, the company showcased its new design that has translucent elements as if the whole software has been crafted from glass. Apple calls the new design language Liquid Glass and it says that by bringing it to all its devices at the same time it wants to offer a consistent experience across devices.

The Liquid Glass design will be rolled out across all Apple software including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS. “There’s another piece of our platform story this year, and it’s a big one,” Apple’s Craig Federighi said at WWDC 2025 as he introduced the new software design.

The last redesign, according to Apple, was with the iOS 7 back when the company was “inspired by the recent emergence of retina displays, and the amazing power of A6 silicon.” So, it has been a while and now the company thinks that it is time to bring something fresher to its software.

The new design, which uses translucent elements, and has a fair amount of “glass” into it, is clearly inspired by the company’s VisionOS that was earlier introduced with the Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headset.

“Today, we’re excited to announce our broadest design update ever,” said Alan Dye, Apple’s Vice President of Design. “The new design starts with an entirely new, expressive material we call liquid glass. With the optical qualities of glass and a fluidity that only Apple can achieve, it transforms depending on your content or even your context and brings more clarity to navigation and controls.”

The company says that “Liquid Glass is translucent and behaves just like glass in the real world.”

As noted earlier, the new design would be coming with iOS 26 — yes, Apple is changing the way it names its software versions — as well as other major software updates that the company would release in the coming weeks for all its devices. It is not yet clear just what sort of hardware requirements the new design would have and what all devices would be supported. It is also not clear whether all the “glass” effects will be available on all supported devices or the most sophisticated of these design flourishes will be only limited to the latest iPhones and MacBooks.

Irrespective, it is clear that within weeks your iPhone experience, or for that matter the look and feel of your MacBook, Watch and iPad, are all going to change.
