The Air Jordan 1 High ’85 Bred release in February remains one of the most highly regarded sneaker drops of the year. Only 10,000 pairs were made for the most faithful recreation to date of the shoe’s original specifications from 1985, and sneakerheads are naturally clamoring for more colorways to get the high-level execution. Several samples have emerged with the ’85 build on other OG colorways, and that list has now expanded thanks to one of the godfathers of streetwear.

The Air Jordan 1 High ’85 UNC was spotted on the feet of Hiroshi Fujiwara. Photographer Naoki Muramatsu posted a shot of Fujiwara, who just last week released a Nike Air Force 1 collaboration with Supreme through his label GoodEnough, wearing the previously unseen sneakers. Although it took a few days for the photo to be discovered, as Muramatsu has just over 1,000 followers on Instagram, it quickly got enthusiasts buzzing once it was seen.

Jordan Brand went into painstaking detail for the construction of the Air Jordan 1 High ’85 Bred in celebration of the seminal model’s 40th anniversary. Higher-quality leather brought the price point up to $250, and work on executing the right proportions began nearly four years before the sneaker hit stores. Original pairs were deconstructed and X-rayed for the sake of accuracy, and micro details such as the stitching and a “more sporadic” midsole pattern were carefully considered. Pairs also arrived unlaced as they would have 40 years ago, and the box read “Air Jordan” rather than “Air Jordan 1,” as the numbers were only added after the series grew in numbers.

“There was an unrelenting task of perfection that [Air Jordan 1 product director] Jason [Grisby] and his team achieved to get this done,” Robert Williams, Nike senior curator of sneaker culture, told Boardroom in a feature on the work behind sneaker. “That speaks volumes.”

Samples for the Air Jordan 1 High ’85 build have been seen for the Chicago, Irregular Shadow and Royal colorways, as well a UNC Metallic treatment without precedence. Of these, Irregular Shadow is the only one yet with any evidence that it will actually go on to be released to the public.

Time will tell if the Air Jordan 1 High ’85 UNC will be released to the public, and the fact that Fujiwara was previously spotted in the Irregular Shadow colorway could be a cause for optimism. Footwear News will keep you abreast of any updates.
