A 19-year-old girl from the US state of Arizona died after attempting the dangerous “dusting” challenge, which left her parents devastated and determined to warn others.
Renna O’Rourke died after participating in the viral social media challenge known as “dusting” or “chroming”. The trend involves inhaling aerosol gases, often from keyboard cleaning sprays, to experience a temporary high, all while chasing views and online attention.
Renna’s parents told AZ Family, a local broadcast television network, that she went into cardiac arrest after inhaling the toxic fumes. She was rushed to the hospital and remained unconscious for nearly a week before being declared brain dead.
The girl’s father, Aaron O’Rourke, recalled her desire to be famous. “She always said, ‘I’m gonna be famous, Dad. Just you watch.’ Unfortunately, this is not under the most optimal of circumstances,” he told the local broadcaster.
Her mother, Dana, pointed out how easily accessible the substance is. “There’s no ID required. It’s odourless. It’s everything kids look for. They can afford it, they can get it, and it doesn’t show in mum and dad’s drug test,” she said while speaking to AZ Family.
Now grieving, the parents are working to raise awareness about the lethal trend that has already claimed other young lives.
Dr Randy Weisman, who heads the ICU at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, described the trend as “extremely concerning”. He explained that the inhaled chemicals replace oxygen in the body, leading to severe consequences.
“When they inhale these chemicals in the gas, it will actually replace the oxygen within their lungs and within the rest of their body,” he told AZ Family. This could lead to multiple organ failure, including the heart, liver, and lungs.
He also confirmed that Renna is not the only one. “Several other teenagers have succumbed to this same disorder,” Weisman added, while urging parents and young people to take this trend seriously.
Renna O’Rourke’s story is a reminder of how social media trends can turn deadly. Her parents hope that their loss will spark important conversations and prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak.
