Few people know vintage like Jenny Walton—and even fewer wear vintage like Jenny Walton. It’s for this reason the girl about town (Milan, at the moment) has such a following. The key to pulling off her vintage looks (which span several decades) is her styling prowess. Think a vintage brooch with a modern-day Prada cashmere cardigan or a 1950s circle skirt with the latest Gucci slingbacks. But first, where is she getting these pieces? A vintage shopper rarely reveals her sources, but just for Vogue, Walton is sharing the wealth. Each month, Walton will comb through the World Wide Web and share what she feels are the best vintage buys of the moment. These are the vintage treasures you need now, according to Walton.

Lately, I’ve been noticing an uptick in the dramatic skirt department. Full skirts, bubble hems, exaggerated A-lines, and styles tiered to heaven and back. The silhouette is less important, what counts is the drama. The thing about a voluminous skirt is that it so easily adds just the right amount of flair to an outfit whose grandeur can be offset with the perfectly simple knit tee and sandal (think Jackie O. in Capri). While new styles might not offer the volume we deserve, vintage is here to once again save the day.

Looking for a dramatic item is the perfect opportunity to search with emotion, so inject some adjectives into that search bar. Use words like “dramatic,” “incredible,” “amazing,” or “voluminous” to help aid in your search. Late seventies/early eighties YSL is a great place to start (these styles were often paired with cropped boleros). Dries Van Noten makes beautiful draped skirts and is also worth a search. The 1950s dresses are full of volume and Etsy is bursting at the seams with them (although, remember to also purchase a petticoat if you want the type of volume often seen in sellers’ photos). Maxi or midi are good search terms as well as draped, full, bubble, circle and A-line. Have fun with your search and here’s to a little drama this summer!

Very of the “Miu Miu” moment is this incredible voluminous 1950s skirt. Imagine just how cute she would be paired with a striped little knit top from Petit Bateau and a menswear-inspired brogue.

While typically worn under the occasional wedding dresses one might don once or twice in a lifetime, a vintage-boned hoop skirt is a fabulously strange thing to wear solo. The hoops can be removed if you would like a less dramatic dome shape (but…why?)

In the vein of Prada’s fall 2025 slick green leather poncho, we have Bottega Veneta’s iconic fall 2022 skirt in a bold acid limoncello. If you’re looking for a full leather skirt in a more neutral color try this 2021 Chloé wonder.

In this vintage YSL Rive Gauche 1980s yellow silk set, you get the pleasure of a voluminous skirt with the addition of a matching halter top. Perfect for summer evenings on the Mediterranean (and particularly if you want to make sure you’re not in the same dress as anyone else).

Holy bustle! This Victorian 19th century brown silk bustle skirt is begging to be worn somewhere fabulous. Unabashedly pair with something modern for the ultimate juxtaposition.

One of my personal favorites this month is this stunning circle skirt from the 1950s. In a floral and butterfly print with corded stitching, you absolutely must wear with a petticoat underneath to show off that beautiful wealth of printed fabric.

While seemingly straight, just take one step and this skirt will reveal it’s hidden volume. Look #34 from the fall/winter 2002 collection, as worn by Anne Catherine Lacroix. I would wear with a neutral tank tucked in and a Greek sandal.

1980s heaven! Gianfranco Ferr é evening skirt in the most fabulous shade of emerald green. It would be so easy to layer a minidress underneath to transform your look as a dramatic evening progresses.

I love the idea of letting this quilted skirt out by undoing the buckles, or keeping them as is and storing my belongings in the impromptu pockets in lieu of a handbag.

I love the juxtaposition of a brown, raw edged skirt in a beautifully elegant silhouette.

It’s not a dramatic skirt list without a floral Dries Van Noten full-length number. Pair with a beautiful bateau neckline black top or for the truly daring, mix with your favorite printed Dries top.

No one does volume quite like Simone Rocha (I’m still thinking about a beautiful black cape dress I sadly passed on years ago, and never forgot). Don’t let that happen to you with this timeless black skirt that could so easily be dressed up or down.

A perfect pleated Prada skirt with the perfect juxtaposition between a timeless silhouette and utilitarian fabric. It would look perfect with a tucked-in light blue chambray button-down.

This Chanel see-through silk chiffon skirt is a wonderful option for those who want the drama of a full skirt without it having to take up their whole suitcase. If this describes your situation this summer, consider searching for maxi and midi skirts in flowing silk chiffon. Pair with a full length nude slip or black boy short.
