Trinamool Congress’ prominent member, Mahua Moitra, is known for her fiery speeches and unflinching criticism in the Parliament during key discussions. With her opinions and debates, the MP has grabbed much attention and many headlines. However, this time around, she is making news for another reason. Reportedly, Mahua Moitra has tied the knot with Pinaki Misra, a BJD leader from Odisha. As per sources, the couple got married in a very hush-hush ceremony in Germany, and even their respective party members claim ignorance about this new development in their lives. To note, neither Mahua nor Pinaki have issued any official statements regarding their alleged marriage. 

Pinaki Misra is an important BJD leader and won the MP seat from Puri four times 

Pinaki Misra, as reported by Financial Express, is an important member of Odisha’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and also served as an MP from Puri four times. Apart from that, he is also a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India. He has led an illustrious career as a lawyer and has presented cases in almost all major tribunals and High Courts across the country. 

Pinaki Misra was born in October 1959 in Odisha, but his schooling and higher education were completed in Delhi. He went to St. Xavier’s School, then went on to study for a B.A. (Hons) in History degree at St. Stephen’s College, and completed his L.L.B, at the notable Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. 

Pinaki Misra also comes from a family with deep ties to the political landscape of Odisha. Indian Express reported that he is the grandson of Godabrish Misra, who was a popular poet, socialist leader and social reformer in pre-independent India. Former MP Pinaki’s father, Lokanath Misra, was an MLA, first with Congress and then with the Swatantra Party. Meanwhile, his uncle served as the 21st Chief Justice of India, and his cousin became the 45th CJI of the country. 

Pinaki Misra was married once before tying the knot with Mahua Moitra

Pinaki Misra had reportedly gotten married to Sangita Misra in 1984. Later, the couple got divorced. However, the exact year of their separation has not been reported. From this marriage, the 65-year-old politician has two children, a son and a daughter. Not much is known about his personal life. Even his recent marriage with Mahua Moitra came as a surprise not only to the public but also to his fellow BJD party members. 

Pinaki Misra was once questioned about his relationship with Mahua Moitra in 2023 

Back in December 2023, MP Mahua Moitra was embroiled in a controversy for allegedly receiving cash in exchange for raising certain questions at the parliament. During this time, the Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) Odisha unit showed a photo of Pinaki Misra and Mahua Moitra and asked why the two leaders from different parties were close to each other. 

Pinaki Misra is known for his calm debates in the Lok Sabha 

Pinaki Misra is a respected leader of BJD and is known for his calm demeanour even while debating in the Lok Sabha, which is very different from Mahua Moitra’s debates, which more often than not get heated. Before joining BJD, he was affiliated with the Indian National Congress and won the Puri Lok Sabha seat for the first time in 1996. Apart from this, he is also a member of significant committees such as the Standing Committee on Finance and the Business Advisory Committee. 

Pinaki Misra and Mahua Moitra have yet to confirm their marriage news

A photo of Mahua Moitra and Pinaki Misra holding hands and smiling, while bedecked in traditional wear and the former wearing heavy jewellery has gone viral. The Telegraph India sourced these photos and claimed that the two political leaders had gotten married at a very private event in Germany. The wedding reportedly took place on May 30, 2025. However, everyone, including the party members of this alleged couple, was unaware of the wedding. Both Mahua and Pinaki have also kept quiet on this matter and have neither confirmed nor denied the validity of the photo. 

Mahua Moitra was married to a Danish financier before reportedly getting married to Pinaki Misra

Mahua Moitra was married once as well before her alleged wedding with Pinaki Misra. An investment banker herself, before joining politics, the TMC MP was once married to a Danish financier called Lars Brorson. The couple got divorced later; however, neither the year of marriage nor the divorce was made public. After that, Mahua Moitra was allegedly in a relationship with advocate, Anant Dehadrai for about three years. Once, fact-checking information spread about her identity, Mahua Moitra tweeted out confirmation of her first marriage and divorce and wrote:

“My ex husband is Lars Wauvert Brorson. My name is and has always been Mahua Moitra.”

Mahua Moitra belongs to a Bengali Hindu family and was born in 1974 in Assam. She is currently 50 years old and has an age gap of fifteen years with her alleged husband, Pinaki Misra. Before joining politics, she used to work in New York as an investment banker. However, in 2008, Mahua joined politics through Congress’ youth wing and then later joined TMC. No reports of how and where Mahua Moitra and Pinaki Misra first met have come out yet. However, the Hindustan Times reported that as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India, the BJD leader had once represented Mahua Moitra and acted as her counsel.
