Aamir Khan’s last film Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) failed at the box office. Many believed that due to the ‘boycott movement’ and trolling, a section of the audience stayed away, resulting in its debacle. During a group interaction held as part of the promotions of Sitaare Zameen Par, he opened up on this topic.
Aamir Khan hits back at ‘boycott’ and ‘Go to Pakistan’ troll comments; DENIES that Laal Singh Chaddha flopped due to trolling: “Imagine if same level of trolling had happened for 3 Idiots…koi aadmi paida nahin hua hai jo acchi film ko rok sakta hai”
Aamir Khan began by saying, “I feel bad when I get trolled. After all, you work so hard on a film. But that person is slamming your film just to spread negativity about it. He has not seen the film and he might not even know about its topic. He just wants to spread negativity, come what may. There’s a reason we call them trolls (laughs). They spread negativity and hence, they are trolls.”
When asked if he feels that trolling can flop a film, he replied, “Trolling doesn’t affect the box office at all. Koi aadmi paida nahin hua hai jo acchi film ko rok sakta hai. Aur koi producer paida nahin hua iss duniya mein jo buri film ko chala sakta hai (smiles). Laal Singh Chaddha got massively trolled. Maybe, you feel that’s the reason it didn’t work. Galat keh rahe hain aap. Imagine if the same level of trolling had happened for 3 Idiots (2009) or Dangal (2016). What do you think? Trolling would not have worked because those were great films. Toh trolling kaamyaab hui ya film nakaamyaab hui? It was the film that failed to touch the hearts of the viewers.”
Aamir Khan continued, “Hence, I don’t get disturbed by trolling. You troll me; mujhe koi tension nahin hai. I am worried about whether the film is well-made and whether my work is up to the mark. I am focused on the real audience and what they comment on the songs of our film on YouTube. It takes me one second to understand who is a troll. Those who write ‘boycott, boycott’ and ‘Go to Pakistan’, main samaj jaata hoon ki woh troll hai! He has not even heard the song; he’s just there to spread negativity. Hence, that reaction makes no difference to me. I want to hear the real audience.”
Sitaare Zameen Par releases in cinemas on June 20.
