Aamir Khan is a one-of-a-kind superstar. One can ask him any question and he’ll surely answer it truthfully and in detail, without mincing awards. A group of journalists got a chance to see that first-hand when during a group interaction held as part of the promotions of Sitaare Zameen Par.
Aamir Khan advises youngsters to go for therapy as soon as possible: “We are trained to be actors, engineers, doctors, etc. No one trains us how to be a samajdar adult. That can be done with therapy; I wish I had started therapy at 18”
Aamir Khan was asked to give advice to youngsters on relationships. The star replied, “Who am I to give advice? I have not been particularly successful in my own relationships! Aap galat aadmi se advice poochh rahen hain.”
The journalist pointed out that he was indeed the right person as he has been friends with his ex-wives, Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao. Aamir confessed, “That’s true. I have been remarkably successful. Despite divorce, my relationship is not broken.”
He then gave a valuable suggestion, “Some years ago, I began therapy. It has benefited me a lot. Until then, I used to think that people didn’t understand me. Everyone thinks ki main kya galat kar raha hoon; main toh sahi kar raha hoon. When you begin therapy, you realize that your happiness is only in your hands. It is not in anybody’s hands and that shouldn’t be the case either. When you decide to get into a relationship with someone, it is a very important decision. If you chose the wrong partner, you are bound to get upset.”
He added, “Thanks to therapy, I understood the idea of red flags. Until then, I didn’t know what is red flags (laughs)! Now, I realize, ‘Achhaa, this is a red flag’. After 3 years of therapy, if I meet a beautiful girl, I’ll talk to her for 2 minutes and then I realize ‘Yeh hai toh badi khoobsurat lekin red flag mere ko 15-20 dikh rahe hai yahan. Toh boriya bistra baandho aur niklo yahan se’ (laughs).”
Aamir Khan confessed, “For a healthy relationship to be successful, it’s important to be truthful. Secondly, think before you choose someone as your partner. I wish I had started therapy at the age of 18. If I had, then I would have known at the age of 18 about my faults. Therapy never tells you about the other person. Therapy tells you about yourself. You understand where you have gone wrong.”
He continued, “My advice to youngsters would be that start therapy as soon as possible. It’ll help you understand about adult life, relationships and your career, that too at an early age. It’ll stop you from committing mistakes left-right-centre. Fir aap soch samaj ke galtiyan karoge (laughs). Therapy will help you have potentially better relationships. It will also help you maybe realize that you don’t need a partner.”
Aamir Khan exulted, “Relationships should be given a lot of value. That is all that is there in this life. Hence, your relationships should be healthy. It should give support and meaning to your life. That’s what relationships are meant to do. I feel that we don’t get training to be adults. We are trained to be actors, engineers, doctors, etc. No one trains us how to be a samajdar adult. That can be done with good therapy.”
He ended his answer by remarking, “It’s a separate discussion, however, that there aren’t enough therapists in our country.”
