In an exclusive quote shared with Bollywood Hungama on the occasion, Sandeepa said, “Two years ago, I chose to move into my current house, so that I could watch the sunset over mangroves from my balcony; coffee in hand, ancient trees filtering the air I breathed. Today, I stare at the same view: a barren wasteland where trucks dump sand and mud where roots once grew.”
Her words not only convey a sense of personal loss but also draw attention to the larger crisis of unchecked urban expansion at the cost of natural ecosystems.
“We’re in a race between making space for humans and keeping humans alive,” she added. “Every tree we cut down is one less set of lungs cleaning our air, one less guardian keeping water in our soil. We’re dismantling the very machinery that keeps us breathing. The question isn’t whether we have room for more people; it’s whether we’ll have a planet left for the people we already have.”
On World Environment Day, individuals, governments, and corporations are urged to rethink their relationship with nature. For Sandeepa, the disappearing mangroves outside her home serve as a stark and personal symbol of what is at stake.
