The US government has issued a warning to its citizens about the risks of using dating apps after several Americans were kidnapped by people they met through these platforms in Mexico. According to the US Consulate in Guadalajara, confirmed cases of abductions occurred in popular tourist areas including Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit.

“Victims and their family members in the United States have at times been extorted for large sums of money to secure their release,” said the consulate in a security alert. The threat is not limited to just one area, and US officials instructed people to stay cautious when using dating apps, particularly while travelling.

According to the Pew Research Centre, nearly 30% of Americans have used dating apps. These platforms are a popular way to meet new people, but experts warn that people are being scammed, and even kidnapped after using these apps.

US CONSULATE ISSUES GUIDELINES FOR SAFE TRAVEL

The US Consulate has shared a set of safety tips for people planning to travel to Mexico and meet someone from a dating app. One key piece of advice is to always meet in public places and avoid private or remote locations, like homes or hotel rooms.

“Travelers should use caution when meeting strangers; meet only in public places and avoid isolated locations, such as residences or hotel rooms, where crimes are most likely to occur,” the warning said.

The Jalisco region, where Guadalajara is located, is under a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” advisory due to the risk of crime and kidnapping. Neighboring Nayarit is under a “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” advisory.

Musk, hardline US Republicans ramp up attacks on Trump tax and spending bill:

    • Be cautious when using dating apps in Mexico
    • Meet only in public spaces, not isolated areas
    • Let a friend or family member know your plans—where you are going, who you’re meeting, and through which app
    • Trust your instincts and leave if something doesn’t feel right
    • In case of emergency, dial 911

Americans in Mexico who need emergency help can contact the nearest US embassy or consulate.
