Congress questions PM Modi’s silence as Indian students hit hard

NEW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday expressed concern over Indian students being affected by US President Donald Trump‘s move on visas and slammed PM Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar for remaining “totally quiet” on the issue. As the US government’s decision is being widely criticised, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, drew a parallel comparison with China, saying that it has reacted strongly regarding its students, but PM Modi and S Jaishankar have not uttered a word yet.Taking to X, Ramesh mentioned figures of Indian students in US for higher education, saying, “according to the ministry of external affairs, about 3,37,630 Indian students have gone to the US for higher education in the year 2024. About one-third of the foreign students studying in various US campuses are from India.” “This means that around 3.5 lakh Indian families spent their hard-earned money or took loans for their children’s education in America,” he added. He highlighted that these students are now facing serious uncertainty bout their future. “The dreams of many students planning to go to the US in 2025 may now remain unfulfilled,” he said. “Our Prime Minister and Foreign Minister are completely silent”He further lashed out at PM Modi and EAM S Jaishankar for not saying anything on the issue yet. “President Donald Trump has made his intentions clear. China has reacted harshly regarding its students. But, not surprisingly, our Prime Minister and Foreign Minister are completely silent on this issue.” “They have neither said anything on President Trump’s claims of stopping Operation Sindoor in four days, nor have they expressed concern about how millions of Indian students and their families are being badly affected by Trump’s policies,” he added.
