Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s performances in Raajneeti continue to be remembered by fans, showcasing their talent in one of the most ambitious political dramas of its era. Ranbir impressed with his quiet intensity and subtle acting, while Katrina amazed everyone with her deep preparation and dedication to the role.
Prakash Jha praises Katrina Kaif’s hard work in Raajneeti; says, “She put in immense effort, learning her lines for 30-40 days to deliver them with confidence”
Raajneeti, released in 2010, recently saw its creators—director Prakash Jha and screenwriter Anjum Rajabali—reflect on the film’s journey during a conversation with SCREEN. They revealed that the story was not originally planned as an adaptation of the Mahabharata.
Jha said, “Unlike Gangaajal (2003) or Apaharan (2005), Raajneeti didn’t happen after witnessing a specific incident. It was a broader socio-political drama based on reality, but resonating with the Mahabharata. The characters are all the same everywhere, as they were back in the epic.”
Rajabali remembered when Jha told him they had found their Arjuna — Ranbir Kapoor. “Who, Rishi Kapoor’s son? That’s how I knew of him,” Rajabali said, mentioning that Bhansali’s Saawariya hadn’t even been released yet. “Have you seen it? Can he perform?” He asked. Jha said, “I haven’t, but my instinct says he can.” Rajabali admitted, “I trusted his instincts, but I had my doubts.”
But all doubts disappeared when Rajabali visited the set in Bhopal. Jha showed him a scene where Ranbir sits silently, reacting to news of his father’s death and his brother’s arrest.
Rajabali said, “That boy was speaking volumes with his silence. There was no prep. He’s an intuitive actor, a complete natural. I was completely convinced. Ranbir had very few lines, but boy, did he leave an impact! He’s the best actor we’ve had in more than a decade now.”
While Ranbir made a lasting impact, Katrina Kaif’s transformation was equally impressive. Rajabali revealed that her character was loosely based on Draupadi, with elements from the epic adapted to suit a contemporary context.
Rajabali was initially worried about Katrina managing the Hindi-heavy script. “Once again, Prakash was confident she’d deliver,” he said.
Jha supported his casting decision and praised her dedication. “Katrina is a very hardworking actor. She put in immense effort, learning her lines for 30-40 days to deliver them with confidence,” he shared.
Rajabali added that although her accent concerned him during filming, the dubbing sessions changed his perspective. “The amount of effort she put in… she managed to deliver every word with near-perfect diction,” he said.
Fifteen years on, Raajneeti remains a milestone in both Ranbir and Katrina’s careers—a film that pushed their boundaries and showcased performances that continue to resonate today.
