In a major relief to motorists, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced free parking at 10 locations in South Mumbai’s A Ward, covering key areas such as Fort, Colaba, and Nariman Point.

The decision comes following a spate of complaints received by the civic body against parking contractors for allegedly overcharging citizens and collecting fees without proper authorisation.

In response, the BMC conducted a sting operation and registered a police complaint against one contractor for not only overcharging but also permitting parking in no-parking zones.

The roads where parking will now be free include Jamnalal Bajaj Marg, Dorabji Tata Road and the traffic island opposite Eros Cinema, where both have been made free since June 1, Walchand Hirachand Marg Part 2, the western side of Ramjibhai Kamani Marg along with Currimbhoy Marg, Badruddin Tayyabji Marg, Mudrana Shetty Lane, Tamarind Lane, Horniman Circle, V N Road, Homji Street and Nagindas Master Lane.

Former BJP Councillor Makarand Narwekar, who had long demanded free parking in areas where contracts had expired, welcomed the move.

“Finally, the BMC has come to its senses and taken a decision in the interest of the public. This free parking should continue until a new pay-and-park policy with stricter transparency and accountability measures is implemented,” he said.

A Ward, which includes heritage zones and major tourist spots, experiences high vehicular traffic due to the concentration of government offices, commercial centres, and cultural landmarks.

The BMC usually charges Rs 70 for four-wheelers and Rs 20 for two-wheelers, but has now decided not to renew contracts with 24 private parking contractors in the ward.
