As Punjab Kings gear up for their first-ever IPL title clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, captain Shreyas Iyer has singled out head coach Ricky Ponting as a driving force behind the team’s turnaround in IPL 2025.
During his pre-match press interaction ahead of the final on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Iyer reflected on Ponting’s influence in shaping a balanced, motivated squad. He pointed to Ponting’s calm presence, equal treatment of players, and motivating approach as key elements behind PBKS’ successful campaign.
“Ricky Ponting is an amazing coach who manages the players precisely. One that that stands out with him is that he treats every player equally. That’s a real big boost to every individual, whether he is a junior or senior moist,” Iyer said.
“I have never seen his emotions going up and down regardless of the result. That’s the sign of a great coach. And the assertive thoughts that he provides with his speeches before and after the game, that gives us immense boost. After the game, we are always excited to listen to him and it’s simply phenomenal to work with him,” he added.
Ponting’s appointment as head coach ahead of the season came with high expectations. After eight seasons with Delhi Capitals, where he came close to silverware but never clinched the title, his move to a largely overhauled PBKS setup was viewed as a fresh start. Under his guidance and Iyer’s leadership, Punjab ended an 11-year playoff drought and reached only their second final in IPL history — their first since 2014.
While Ponting’s stint with Delhi saw highs — including playoff qualifications in 2019, 2020, and 2021 — his final years were marked by inconsistency, with DC finishing outside the top four in three consecutive seasons. That chapter came to a close with a coaching reshuffle at DC, and Ponting’s transition to Punjab presented a chance at redemption.
In his debut year with PBKS, Ponting oversaw a bold auction strategy, built a core of fearless young players, and instilled a winning mentality that has carried the team through high-pressure games. Several players have credited his leadership style as the backbone of their resurgence this year.
Now, standing one win away from completing his unfinished IPL business, Ponting has the opportunity to lead Punjab Kings to their maiden title — a moment that could redefine both his legacy and the franchise’s future.
