Musician Adnan Sami has opened up about a deeply personal loss, and the heartbreak of being unable to say goodbye. In a recent interview, the singer revealed that he was not allowed to enter Pakistan to attend his mother Naureen Sami Khan’s funeral, despite receiving permission from the Indian government.
Adnan Sami reveals he was denied visa by Pakistan to attend his mother’s funeral: “There was no problem from India’s side”
Speaking to India TV, Sami shared that his mother passed away a few months ago, unexpectedly and without prior health complications. Following her death, the singer reached out to both Indian and Pakistani authorities seeking permission to travel across the border for her final rites.
Recalling the moment when he approached Indian officials, Sami said, “Maine yahan ki sarkaar se poochha main jana chahta hoon toh apko koi objection to nahin. Unhone kaha, ‘Zahir hai, aapki maa ka inteqal hua hai, aapko zaroor jana chahiye’. Unki taraf se koi problem nahin tha.” (I asked the Indian government if they had any objection to me travelling. They said, ‘It’s obvious, your mother has passed away, you must go’. There was no issue from their end.)
However, things took a painful turn when the Pakistani government refused to grant him a visa. Sami said he submitted an official request but was denied entry despite explaining the nature of his visit. “Maine visa ke liye apply kiya, par unhone refuse kar diya. Maine kaha, ‘Meri maa ka inteqal hua hai’. Phir bhi unhone mana kar diya,” he said. (I applied for a visa, but they refused. I told them my mother had passed away. Still, they denied me.)
Left with no other option, Sami was forced to watch his mother’s funeral virtually. “Main nahin ja saka. Maine unka poora janaza WhatsApp ke video pe dekha,” the singer added, visibly emotional.
Adnan Sami first arrived in India on March 13, 2001, on a visitor visa. Over time, he continued to extend his stay, and after his Pakistani passport expired in 2015 and was not renewed by authorities in Islamabad, he approached the Indian government for legalisation of his residency. In 2016, he was officially granted Indian citizenship.
