Aamir Khan reflects on early marriage with Reena Dutta: “We grew together, it was not a mistake”

In a podcast with Raj Shamani, Aamir discussed his personal life and recalled his first marriage saying, “Reena aur maine bahut jaldi shaadi kar li (We got married very early). Legally the day that was possible for me to get married – which was April 18, a month’s notice after I turned 21 on March 14 – we got married on that day. Reena was only 19 at the time. We only knew each other for 4 months and that too we had only spent very little time with each other. We did love each other a lot but now when I think back, I feel like a step like marriage should have been a well-thought decision. Uss waqt jawani ke josh mein aap bahut saara cheezein aap nahi samajte ho, halaaki baad mein aapko ehsaas hota hai (At that time, when you are young, you don’t think about many things but you do understand it in the later stages of your life)”.

Despite the impulsive start, Aamir stressed that the relationship was meaningful and enriching. “However, I must say that our marriage was very good. I do not mean that Reena or the marriage with her was a mistake. That is not at all what I am saying. To be honest, Reena is an amazing person because of this early marriage, we actually ended up growing together. Even today, we respect and love each other a lot. But I believe that no one at such a young age or in a hurry should take a huge step in their lives,” he shared.

The actor, who shared 16 years of marriage with Reena before parting ways amicably, acknowledged the impact that period had on shaping his life. He added, “Having said that, I don’t think I would be sitting here if I would have not done that. So I cannot ever call it a ‘mistake’. In fact, another reason why I can’t accept that it was a mistake is because the marriage gave me two most priceless gifts – my kids – Ira and Junaid. I also got to spend about 16 years with Reena.”

Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta got married in 1986 and separated in 2002. Despite their split, the two continued to share a strong friendship and co-parented their children. While Ira is currently married to Nupur Shikhare and she has been working towards social causes, Aamir’s son Junaid made his acting debut in films last year with Maharaj.
