Filmmaker Zaigham Imam’s Nakkash completed six years yesterday. Starring Inaamulhaq, Sharib Hashmi, Gulki Joshi, Kumud Mishra, and Rajesh Sharma, the film was based on the theme of communal harmony. Inaamulhaq looked back at the movie in an interview with us.
Inaamulhaq on 6 years of Nakkash, where he played a Muslim sculptor of Hindu deities, “Even today I get messages that someone watched it on YouTube”
Six years of your best performance as a Muslim sculptor of Hindu deities
Six years have passed and the sculptor has not even realized it. However, this film is very special for me because it was my first film as a lead and it was like a dream come true.
Had you decided to become a movie actor from early?
In fact, I had never even imagined that I would ever go to Bollywood and play a lead role, that I will become an actor, it was just that yes, I wanted to become an actor, now everything big or small is involved in it. However, this was a very big thing for me that someone trusted me and gave the responsibility of an entire film on my shoulders, that too a film of the kind of cinema I want to do.
Nakkash has a very important message on the co-existence of the two communities
Mohammed Rafi Saab sang some of the finest Bhajans. In Nakkash, I played a sculptor who makes idols of deities. It was a very big thing for me and it is a very special film and will remain so. Unfortunately, the kind of cinema this is, Nakkash, it could not reach where it should have reached in this era.
Why do you think Nakkash didn’t get an audience?
There are many reasons for it. The main reason is that cinema is caught up in profit loss of Rs. 100 crores, Rs. 200 crores and the cinema which is in true sense cinema, gets side-lined, but no matter what, the impact lingers. Even today I get messages that someone watched it on YouTube. If anyone watches this kind of cinema anywhere. The audience connects with Nakkash and writes nice messages from the heart that they liked the film so much that they cried or I almost cried, many such things still come to me continuously.
You received a lot of recognition for Nakkash
Personally, I have also received international recognition, so overall as an actor it is a very special film for me.
How much of preparation did you undertake to play the sculptor?
It was definitely a difficult character for me to prepare. A labourer who is basically a sculptor. Even though he is a labourer, he is doing craftsmanship but breaking iron, all that, I had to do that. I am a bit of a method actor type; I try it sometimes. So, during that time I learnt sculpting, stayed among those labourers in Varanasi, understood their lifestyle and adopted it and ate what they ate. It is important that if an actor has got the privilege of living many lives in one life, then he should not live it in a superficial manner. I try to live that life which I play even if it is for a short time. So, I tried living the life of a labourer as well.
Do you think being an actor comes with a responsibility?
We live many lives on screen. So, I try to gain that experience of playing a character because God has given such a privilege to the actor that he can live many lives in one life. So, I take advantage of it and therefore, I try to get into it on the pretext of method. It was an interesting process for me. I still have to learn it.
Another important film of yours Chidiya released recently
Sir, it’s destiny, movies are made, some work, some don’t, but good cinema is always remembered, whether it earns Rs .2 or 100 crores. Like Nakkash , Chidiya will always be remembered. It will always be special for me too, and whenever people will see it, it will make some impact, this is my prayer. My effort is to make cinema that is meaningful cinema or good cinema. Let’s move ahead like now after ten years a movie has been released. It is unfortunate that it took ten years for Chidiya to release. The kids in it have grown up and grown up a lot. A lot of actors and technicians’ dreams are connected; many people’s ambitions are connected to Chidiya. Everyone cries that good films are not made, but when good films are made then no one wants to release them. Everybody wants face value.
