The trailer launch of the upcoming Amazon Prime OTT reality show The Traitors was held at a studio in Mumbai and it turned out to be a memorable affair. The event began with Karan Johar giving a hint on what the show is all about.

Karan Johar said, “I am the ‘master of ceremony’. All the contestants are blindfolded and I choose the three traitors. The traitors know about it but the rest of them don’t. That’s when the fun begins. Every night a ‘murder’ takes place. The next day, in the ‘circle of shak’, they need to guess who is the traitor. It’s the most exciting part. You, as an audience, know who the traitor is but the contestants don’t. And when the contestants guess the culprit wrong, you (get affected). That’s the beauty of the game. The interactive level between the audience and the show is the maximum. You won’t get it in any other reality show.”
When asked about the ‘murder’, KJo explained, “It’s a virtual murder. The person is told, ‘Aap ki rihaayi ho gayi hai. Aap ka murder ho gaya hai. Aap chale jaaiyein’. That person packs his/her bags and leaves the property.”
After the introduction, the contestants were introduced in a dramatic fashion, in five sets. In the first set, Raftaar, Jannat Zubair Rahmani, Sahil Salathia and Uorfi Javed were introduced. Then came Apoorva Makhija, Karan Kundrra, Nikita Luther and Sufi Motiwala. This was followed by Raj Kundra, Elnaaz Norouzi, Lakshmi Manchu, Harsh Gujral and Anshula Kapoor. Sudhanshu Pandey, Janvee Gaurr, Purav Jha and Jasmin Bhasin were the last ones to come on stage. Three contestants couldn’t make it and their posters were shown. They were Maheep Kapoor, Ashish Vidyarthi and Mukesh Chhabra.
Each contestant was asked to speak about what one can expect from them. Jannat Zubair Rahmani said, “People don’t think twice before trusting me. What they don’t know is that behind this innocent face, there’s this person who’s five steps ahead of them. I am going to be calm, play my game and as soon as they put their guards down, Check mate!”
Apoorva Makhija exulted, “People assume that being a red flag is all about lying, manipulation, and deception. All of it is true. But to do all of that requires brains which, unfortunately, most of these people don’t have!”
Raj Kundra stated, “Whenever I have worn a mask, people have wondered, ‘Yeh banda mask ke peeche kya chhupa raha hai?’. There’s a mystery and it might help me in the game. This is a show of kalyug.” He joked, “Since Karan is hosting the show, ‘nepo husband’ wala card zaroor use karunga!”
The Traitors marks Anshula Kapoor’s first-ever acting venture. She said, “I look innocent and even cute. But acting toh hamare khoon mein hai na? Killing it with confidence and a smile is my forte.”
Karan Johar then came back on stage and was asked how The Traitors happened to him. KJo raised laughs as he said, “Traitors have been happening to me all my life! We are in an industry where trust is rare and dhokha is everywhere.”
He then spoke more about the format of the show and revealed how a person, deemed a traitor, is eliminated based on the popular vote by the contestants. KJo said, “Before leaving, the person is asked, ‘Are you a traitor or are you innocent?’. That’s the moment to watch out for.”
He continued, “You can’t communicate with any player, even though I am friendly with some of them. Maheep is one of my dearest friends. I wasn’t even looking at her. She kept getting hassled as she was looking for some validation and a smile. I’d give her the dirtiest looks ever because I am not meant to engage. I cannot be even caught in the corridors and being spoken to. If that happens, the contestants will be asked to leave.”
The Traitors releases on Amazon Prime Video on June 12. Three episodes would drop every Thursday at 8:00 pm.
