Maharani of Baroda, Radhikaraje Gaekwad recently made it to the headlines as she slammed Netflix’s series, The Royals, starring Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter in the lead roles. For the unversed, Radhikaraje dropped a post, wherein she revealed how the series failed to reveal the real side of the royal families. The show, which is loved by many, is all set to make a comeback with its season 2, and amid this, Radhikaraje’s post grabbed all the attention. Known as the most progressive Maharani, Radhikaraje got married to India’s second richest cricketer, Samarjitsinh Gaekwad, in 2002, and in one of her interviews, she talked about her royal wedding attire.

Radhikaraje Gaekwad was born to Maharaja Ranjitsinhji of Wankaner, who gave up his job to be an IAS. Radhikaraje, after establishing herself as a journalist, tied the knot in an arranged marriage setting back in 2002 to the current Maharaja of the princely state of Baroda in India and the rightful heir to the largest private residence in the world, Lukshmi Vilas Palace, Samarjitsinh Ranjitsinh Gaekwad. Radhikaraje and Samarjitsinh’s wedding was fixed by both of their paternal aunties, and she was only 12 years old when her husband’s sister, Alokitaraje saw her at a wedding.

Meanwhile, when she was 23, her family started finding a groom, and so did Samarjitsinh’s family, and as his sister kept Radhikaraje in her mind, so they thought through it, and the couple eventually got married. Radhikaraje worked for two years with the Indian Express as a fashion journalist. She also met a few men before her now-husband, but after meeting Samarjitsinh, she felt different, as he supported her wish to study further. Radhikaraje once shared:
“Baba would pick me up whenever I was late. 3 years later, when my parents began finding a groom for me, I knew I wanted someone who was independent. I had met a few men before Samarjit, but he was different. He was cool about me, offering to pay. And when I told him that I wanted to study further, he encouraged me.”

In an interview with Firstpost, Radhikaraje Gaekwad once talked about her royal attire on her wedding day. Although it was a royal wedding, given the unrest situation due to the Godhra riots, it was arranged in a low-key manner in New Delhi at a Lutyens’ bungalow. In the same interview, Radhikaraje revealed that for her wedding, she wore a Rajput-style poshak, which is a traditional lehenga worn by Rajasthani royal women. Later, Maharani changed into a Chanderi saree, given to her by her mother-in-law for her bidaai rasam. The Maharani was also decked up in Maharashtrian jewels, including the nath. Talking about her sringar on her wedding day, Radhikaraje revealed:
“I wore a poshak, a Rajput-style lehenga, and then changed into a tissue chanderi my mother-in-law gave me for my bidaai. I even wore the Maharashtrian nath. Everyone sat around and witnessed the wedding.”

Radhikaraje Gaekwad is a lover of Indian textiles, and she also tried to revive Baroda Shalu sarees. It was back in 2023 when Radhikaraje took to her IG handle and shared her wedding photo with Samarjitsinh. In the photo, Maharani was seen donning a pink-toned Nauvari saree in georgette. She was seen wearing a maang-teeka and nath, and posing with Maharaj. Samarjitsinh donned a sherwani in a brown hue, which he teamed with a tissue dupatta. Along with the photo, and the details, Maharani also stated that most of the textile view on the snap was vintage.
