A 20-year-old man, Ayaan Ahmed, drowned during a wedding celebration at a farmhouse in Bhopal’s Harrakheda area on Thursday evening. The incident occurred while he was playing in the swimming pool at the venue.
Ayaan, who worked as an auto-rickshaw driver, had gone to attend the wedding of a friend’s sister. According to Gunga Police Station In-Charge Hari Shankar Verma, “This incident took place late last night. Ayaan had gone to attend his friend’s sister’s wedding. While several people were near the swimming pool, Ayaan suddenly slipped while jumping inside and fell into a deeper section. He was pulled out and taken for treatment, but passed away early this morning.”
At the time of the incident, more than ten people were present in the pool. However, no one immediately noticed that Ayaan was missing. When his absence was finally discovered, his friends pulled him out of the water and attempted to revive him by pressing on his stomach to expel water. He briefly regained consciousness and was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his condition early Friday morning.
A video of the incident has surfaced, showing people at the scene in a state of panic as they tried to rescue Ayaan. The footage suggests he was already in critical condition when taken out of the pool.
Ayaan was the only son in his family. His elder sister is married, and his father works as a labourer in a factory. Following a post-mortem examination, his body was handed over to the family.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. “Since the incident took place during a wedding, many people were preoccupied, and not all statements could be recorded immediately. Many guests were present at the time, and their statements will be collected soon. The investigation will proceed based on their statements,” the police official said.
