Uzma Ahmed, the girl who was trapped in Pakistan, is an inspiration to millions of young girls who have been the victim of trafficking. Despite seeing the dead end when she was held captive in one of the remotest parts of northern Pakistan, she didn’t lose hope in her judiciary and country. She gained a lot of spotlight in 2017, when she returned to India.
And now, when her biopic, The Diplomat was released, her tragic story still gained a lot of attention. The film, directed by Shivam Nair tells the gripping tale of Uzma Ahmed, the Indian Muslim girl trapped in Pakistan. The film stars John Abraham helming the role of ‘IFS officer JP Singh’ along with Sadia, Sharib Hashmi, Revathy and a few others.
Uzma Ahmed reveals her inspiration to come back to India
During the promotion of the film, the lead, John Abraham, and Sadia, went to meet the real-life survivor, Uzma Ahmed, who spoke to them about her ordeal. In the video, when Sadia praised Uzma’s courage, she said, ‘ladki brave nahi hoti, maa brave hoti hai’. In the video, Uzma shared that her inspiration to fight and come back was her daughter, Falak. In her words:
“Mind me sirf ye hi tha ke beti hai, beti ko dekhna hai, to waapis jaana hai. Jab mai wahaan gayi, mujhe nahi pata tha, embassy me kuch likhwaate hai ke yahaan pe aaye hain, yahaan se jaayenge. Unhone wo entry bhi nahi karaai thi meri. Baad me JP sir ne ye point uthaaya tha ki aap agar galat nahi ho to is ladki ki entry kyu nahi karaai.”
In the same video, Uzma also revealed Sushma Swaraj’s role in bringing her back. Recalling how Sushma Swaraj’s words gave her confidence, Uzma said:
“Baad me mujhe JP sir ne bataaya tha ki humne Ministry of External Affairs me humne bataaya hai and Sushma mam aapke saath hain. She said, aap Bharat ki beti ho, mai aapko nikaalne ke liye mai sab kuch kar doongi. Jab jab mai court gayi hoon unhone tab tab baat kari hai aur jab mai embassy me thi tab bhi unhone mujhse baat kari thi and tassali de rah thi ki hum hain, hum nikal lenge.”
How was Uzma Ahmed trapped in Pakistan?
At the age of 22, Uzma got married to a man, who fathered Falak. The arranged marriage soon turned abusive, and she parted ways with him. After her failed first marriage, Uzma went to Malaysia to do a course in business management, where she met Tahir Ali, a taxi driver in Malaysia. Slowly, Tahir manipulated Uzma with his fake care, and she fell in love with him.
She soon crossed the border to meet Tahir who lived in Buner, one of the remotest parts of northern Pakistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the Afghanistan border. After visiting Buner, she got to know that Tahir was already married with four kids.
She was abducted, drugged and forced to marry Tahir at gunpoint. All her documents were confiscated, and she was held captive in a tiny room. She somehow managed to reach the Indian High Commission of Islamabad, and with the help of JP Singh, she crossed the Wagah border safely and returned to India.
