Ali Fazal has opened up about his emotional reaction to wife Richa Chadha’s brief yet powerful role in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s opulent Netflix series that debuted in 2023. In the show, Chadha plays Lajjo, a lovelorn courtesan whose story concludes by the second episode but leaves a lasting impact on the audience.
Ali Fazal recalls Rekha tearing up during Richa Chadha’s death scene in Heeramandi: “I thought, maybe it’s just my bias”
In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Fazal recounted attending the premiere and being deeply moved by Chadha’s final scene. “It was absolutely wonderful. I’m such a fan!” he said. “I was totally teary-eyed. I thought, okay, maybe it’s my bias.” But that feeling soon evolved when he noticed someone else just as moved—veteran actress Rekha.
“Tumne humein humare zamane ki yaad dila di”: Rekha to Richa Chadha
Fazal revealed that Rekha, seated beside him at the screening, was visibly emotional after watching the scene. “I look to my right, and there’s Rekha ji in tears,” Fazal said. The Umrao Jaan star later walked up to Richa Chadha and told her, “Tumne humein humare zamane ki yaad dila di.”
Rekha’s response holds deeper resonance considering she was the original choice for the role of Mallikajaan—eventually played by Manisha Koirala—when Heeramandi was first envisioned in the mid-2000s.
Chadha’s Lajjo is a courtesan battling heartbreak and alcoholism after being rejected by her lover, played by Adhyayan Suman. In episode two, after a stirring mujra performance at a mehfil, Lajjo quietly slips away—her character dying during a carriage ride back, marking one of the show’s most gut-wrenching exits.
