Filmmaker Abhishek Sharma’s Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran completed seven years earlier this week on May 25. Starring John Abraham, Diana Penty, Boman Irani among others, it was inspired from the real incidents that made India a nuclear state. Sharma looked back at the film in an interview with us.
7 years of Parmanu: Abhishek Sharma on the film’s relevance today, “As we once again stand against various external enemies, the resolve of our nation remains undeterred”
Do you consider Parmanu the most important film you have directed so far?
Parmanu is very close to my heart as it celebrates the resolve of a nation. The 1998 nuclear tests were a turning point in India’s geopolitical history as they showed the world that we could stand up for our own security against the bullies of the world.
Many would consider it a risky project
It is always risky to make political films but if you are honest with your subject and the intent is pure, I feel the audience respects it. The film was not a regular action masala but a slow burn thriller that used espionage elements and covert intelligence as a cinematic tool to tell the story. The fact that audience loved the film and remembers it even today, means a lot to me as a film maker.
In fact, recent political developments make Parmanu more relevant that ever
Time is the biggest validation for art. If a film remains relevant year after year, it means we have succeeded. And today in the new changing world order, the film resonates even more. As we once again stand against various external enemies, the resolve of our nation remains undeterred.
You had buttoned-up John Abraham as your leading man
John was an absolute dream to collaborate with on this film. He gave every ounce of his energy both as an actor and as a producer to the project. The commitment shows on screen as I feel that this is one of John’s finest performances and he surprised the audience big time by playing an out of the box character.
What are you working on now?
I am developing a lot of subjects in my new company as I have turned producer as well. The immediate next is a very special film with John Abraham again. We are both very excited about it. Will give more details in a few weeks’ time.
