Despite all the ground it’s covered through collaborations and various redesigns, the classic Adidas Samba sneaker is still ripe for reinvention. Several new variations of the model are on the way this year, including this zipper-adorned variation from collaborator Jeremy Scott.

A far cry from Scott’s usual color-drenched designs, his upcoming Adidas Samba OG keeps things relatively conservative with a timeless black, white and gum-soled colorway. Scott’s handiwork appears in the details, specifically on the tongue of the shoe, where a YKK zipper has been affixed down the center. With traditional shoelaces included, the quirky zipper detail doesn’t appear to feature much of a functional purpose but instead allows the wearer to style the Samba in different ways. Co-branding appears on the insole, but the collaboration is otherwise minimally customized and features standard metallic Samba text alongside its serrated three stripes. 

The former Moschino creative director and the Herzogenaurach-based sportswear company have a long history of working together which dates back to 2003. Unlike the forthcoming Samba, the duo’s sneaker collaborations were famous for bold colors, fuzzy adornments and playful patterns which sometimes were closer to children’s toys than athletic footwear. Artists such as Rihanna, A$AP Rocky and Lil Wayne helped drive early visibility for the popular collaborations. But after Scott joined Moschino in October 2013, his partnership with Adidas quietly came to an end before once again collaborating with the brand in 2021. 

“Partnering again with Adidas feels like a homecoming and I’m thrilled to be home,” Scott said in a ’21 press release announcing the newest collaboration. The latest installment of Jeremy Scott x Adidas has thus far featured the designer’s signature Wings sneakers and money prints and will soon introduce a roller skate-equipped version of the Superstar. 

Readers looking to zip up their Sambas won’t have to wait long as the Jeremy Scott x Adidas Samba OG is set to be released June 1 for a retail price of $120. With a SKU of JQ8835 and a full colorway of Core Black/Cloud White/Gum, the collaboration will be available from adidas.com and select Adidas Originals retailers.
