India’s former cricketer, Sourav Ganguly’s elder brother, Snehasish and his wife, Arpita, had a narrow escape from death in Odisha on May 26, 2025. The couple had a close save when they met with an accident while engaging in a water sports activity on a beach at Puri. The horrific and unfortunate incident had taken place when their boat capsized in the choppy waters of the Bay of Bengal.

A report by the NDTV revealed that Sourav’s elder brother, Snehashish, who is a former cricketer from West Bengal and the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, was vacationing with his wife. They had taken part in the water sports on the Puri beach, and the scary incident took place exactly near the lighthouse where the pair was enjoying a speedboat ride. A clip went viral where the speedboat was seen upside down, and three lifeguards were seen near Arpita. She had worn an orange-hued lifejacket over a red kurti and was seen amid choppy waters and roaring waves.

The report by NDTV further revealed that Arpita had blamed the beach operators, who were held responsible for the mishap. This was because their lives were put at risk for the greed of money. Arpita revealed in an interview with the publication that if the lifeguards were not there, then she and her husband would not have been alive. Arpita was speaking about the boat she and her husband were in and shared:
“The sea was already very rough. There was a capacity of 10 people on the boat, but due to the greed for money, they allowed only three to four people on board. This was the last boat to go into the sea for the day. We had raised concerns over going into the sea, but the operators told us that it is fine.”

Arpita, further revealed that it has been difficult for her to come to terms with what happened at the beach with her and her husband. She shared of being in trauma as never in her life has she faced something of this sort. Arpita revealed that if more people were on the boat then it would have surely flipped. Arpita revealed that the boat was not designed to handle more people, and she had to pay a price for the greedy organisers. The boat became unbalanced and unfit due to less people, and was not made to handle even strong waves. She then added:
“Due to less weight, the boat lost balance and could not encounter the huge wave. The sea was already very rough.”
Arpita wants the government to tighten regulations related to water sports
Arpita further noted that she and her husband had already raised concerns related to their safety amid the rough sea and high tide. However, the operators assured them that they were safe. However, when they stepped into the sea, a huge wave hit them and it got capsized. Arpita also made a demand to the government to make strict regulations related to water sports happening at the Puri beach region, and also said that authorities should even ban such activities in totality. However, the locals there alleged that the boat was handled by staff that was untrained. They lacked good skills to handle high-tide mishaps.
