Actress Wamiqa Gabbi has attempted comedy for the first time in Maddock Films’ Bhool Chuk Maaf, where she is cast opposite Rajkummar Rao. She gets talking about the film and her journey in an interview with us.

Bhool Chuk Maaf takes you into the comedic zone for the first time. Was that tough especially since your co-star Rajkummar Rao’s comic timing is insane?
Yes sir, it was very tough because Rajkummar Rao’s comic timing is very good and I was a little nervous for the first two days. But after that, I got better because he made me very comfortable. He was very kind and very supportive, him and our director Karan Sharma. And also, I got to learn a lot while shooting with Rajkummar Rao. But I think I am ready for comedy now.
This is also your first full-fledged mainstream sojourn in Hindi. Were you comfortable with the latka jhatka?
I’m a Punjabi. Therefore, I’ve been comfortable with Latka Jhatka since I was born. So Latka Jhatkas are my thing. I was going crazy with my Latka Jhatkas.
Speaking of latka jhatka, you are a good dancer. You proved it in Jubilee. Was it challenging going back in time? Which of the actresses of the Golden Era do you admire?
I think Madhubala and Meena Kumari. I think there is something in their eyes, in their style, which I liked a lot when I was preparing for Jubilee.
How do look at your journey so far from Punjabi to Hindi cinema? As an outsider, has it been extra tough for you to find your place? How do you weigh in on the insider-outsider debate?
Yes, it has been tough but it’s not been tough only in the Hindi film industry but in the Punjabi film industry as well. And it was a tough journey for me in both the industries to find my place. And I think as an outsider or as someone who does not have much contacts or that background or that power or all those relationships and connections and contacts in the industry, the only thing that saved me is working on my craft.
So, the formula is hard work?
I figured that the only way is to be so good that they can’t reject you, you know, they can’t ignore you. So, I think the only way is to work on yourself the most, become better and better and better. And I’m glad I’m an outsider.
Why do you say that?
Because that’s the mentality I had to develop to, you know, make my mark. And I feel like lifelong it’ll help me anyway because it’s anyway getting me, making me better. So yeah, I’m glad. Jo bhi hota sahi hota hai, toh mujhe koi insider outsider ko leke koi debate ya wo sab nahin hai. I’m just very happy where I come from and I’m very happy where I am right now.
To end with Bhool Chuk Maaf, when is the last time you said sorry to someone?
Well, I said sorry to my dogs just before leaving the house for promotions and I think because of the promotions and shoot I have not been able to see them a lot or spend time with them a lot. So, I remember when I was just coming to Delhi, I was at the door leaving and I literally looked at all of them. I have six dogs. So, six of them were just looking at me, all their attention was on me with those beautiful innocent eyes and all I could say was I’m so sorry, I’ll be back soon.
