Two people were detained in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district after Rs 1.97 crore in cash was found in the car they were travelling in, police said.
The incident came to light on Friday when Malkapur police station inspector Ganesh Giri received a tip-off that a silver Ertiga car was headed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the vehicle had a large amount of cash.
The police officer immediately informed his senior officers about this and blocked the road leading to Sambhaji Nagar. The car was stopped at a ‘nakabandi’ (road block for checking) in Malkapur. But since the place was crowded, the car was taken to the police station where the vehicle was searched under the supervision of Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar and others.
A machine was used to count the cash recovered in the car, which totalled Rs 1.97 crore. The Income Tax Department in Nagpur was informed about the seizure through a letter as per protocol.
“The car was on its way to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The two persons in the car could not give satisfactory answers about the money, following which they were detained. Further probe is underway,” Giri was quoted by saying by news agency PTI.
He said the Akola Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had been informed about the cash seizure and the detainees.
