15 years ago, Hrithik Roshan and father Rakesh Roshan attempted to give the audience a novel experience in the form of Kites (2010). The romantic thriller was mounted on a huge scale and had an international feel. To enhance the value of the film, they roped in a Mexican actress, Barbara Mori, opposite Hrithik. Director Anurag Basu shot the film in never-before-seen locations. The songs added to the buzz and so did the electrifying pairing of Hrithik and Barbara. It opened well, collecting Rs. 10.40 crores. Sadly, the film began to slip from the second day as the word of mouth was not encouraging. Also, the excessive dialogues in English alienated the desi audience.
15 Years of Kites THROWBACK: When Rakesh Roshan slammed Anurag Basu over his mismanagement: “I paid token money for 4 locations in New Mexico as I didn’t know where he would shoot; had told Hrithik Roshan before release that the film won’t work”
In an interview with Mumbai Mirror during the promotion of Kaabil in January 2017, Rakesh Roshan opened up on Kites and how he had anticipated that the film would bomb at the box office. He also blamed director Anurag Basu for his work style.
Rakesh Roshan said, “I have always been a hands-on producer, completely involved with the day-to-day work, even if I am not directing it. I was like that with Krazzy 4 (2008) and Kites too. With Kites, I had to back out after a point because the director (Anurag Basu) wasn’t very organized and his assistants wouldn’t keep me in the loop on many occasions. Once, in New Mexico, I paid token money for four locations because I didn’t know where Anurag Basu would shoot. That was slightly disturbing. Also, they would do exactly the opposite of what I advised. Having started the film, I didn’t wish to make a fuss, so I decided to stay out. But deep down, I felt that the film wouldn’t work. I had told Hrithik as much well before the release.”
A few weeks later, he told Bombay Times about what went wrong with Kites, “I was heading into international waters with Kites. Maybe it was too early. The lead actress was Mexican, hence the foreign language. I always think and act progressively. It works and sometimes, it doesn’t. I’m not concocting a commercial film with forced item songs and double-meaning dialogue to make it work. I always try to give something new to the audience.”
