In his farewell, Supreme Court Justice Abhay Oka delivered a message on the inner workings of the Supreme Court, stressing the need to shift from a Chief Justice-centric model to a more inclusive and structured system.
“I found in the last three years that the Supreme Court is a Chief Justice-centric court. I think we need to change that,” Justice Oka said. He said that unlike High Courts, which operate through committees and fixed rosters, the top court still relies heavily on the Chief Justice for its functioning.
He expressed hope that this approach would evolve during Cheif Justice BR Gavai’s tenure. “The Supreme Court is a court of 34 judges from different areas of our country. Therefore, the image of the Supreme Court as a Chief Justice-centric court needs to change.”
