Shankar Mahadevan appears poised to lead a new era in the music industry with AI. The singer recently teamed up with Google to develop the Lyria AI music generator tool and composed a song using it.

Shankar made a virtual appearance at Google’s annual I/O developer conference on May 20, which took place in Mountain View, California. At the event, Google revealed updates on their upcoming AI products, including a filmmaking AI tool and a music generation tool.
While introducing Lyria 2, Google Research Scientist Jason Baldridge shared that the platform collaborated with musicians to create a music AI sandbox.
He explained, “It is a tool for professionals to explore the possibilities of our generative music model Lyria, in their work. Let’s watch a clip starring legendary Grammy-winning singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan putting the music AI sandbox and Lyria to use.”
The video then features Shankar in his studio, where he said, “I am a music composer, singer, producer and a happy man… Working with Sandbox is great. We inputted our requirements and it gave us a bed. We used that bed and we came up with this song.”
The video then takes viewers behind the scenes in the studio, capturing Shankar and his team as they collaborate on creating a song called Rubaro. It highlights moments such as choosing the ideal beats and adjusting the pitch, offering a glimpse into the creative process behind the song’s production.
Reflecting on the song creation process, Shankar said, “For a musician, it is such an inspiring tool. You open a door and you see there’s another room… And then you open another room, and you have another door… That is what AI does.”
Shankar is renowned for his diverse musical style, which covers Bollywood, devotional, and classical music. He is well-known for his work on songs like Maa, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Desi Girl, Kajra Re, and Uff Teri Adaa.
