Mumbai Indians (MI) sealed the fourth and final spot in the playoffs as they beat Delhi Capitals (DC) by 59 runs in Match 63 of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) on Wednesday, May 21 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Mitchell Santner (3/11), Jasprit Bumrah (3/12) and Suryakumar Yadav (73* off 43) were the architects of Mumbai’s thumping win, as the five-time champions entered the playoffs 11th time in their rich IPL history.

Following their remarkable victory, MI have a great chance to further finish in top two and get the advantage of getting two chances to make it to the finals. However, in order to do that, a lot of things have to go their way. MI are currently placed fourth in the points table with eight wins from 13 matches, having 16 points to their name.

IPL 2025: MI vs DC Highlights

They have their last match against Punjab Kings on May 26 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. If MI manage to win their last fixture, they will finish with 18 points. However, that alone won’t be enough to propel them to the top two.

How can MI finish in top two?

Mumbai Indians will have to surpass the top three teams namely Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings. Gujarat, who’re currently at the top with 18 points, have their last two matches against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). On the other hand, RCB are placed second with 17 points and have their remaining matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and LSG.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings, who’re placed third with 17 points, have their last two matches against DC and MI. For MI to finish in top two, two teams out of RCB, GT and PBKS, need to lose both of their remaining fixtures and MI have to win their last game against PBKS.

In such a scenario, MI will be able to beat two teams on either net run rate or points, clearing their path for a top two finish.

Scenario 1: If RCB, PBKS lose their last two matches

    1. GT (22 Points) 2. MI (18 Points) 3. RCB (17 points) 4. PBKS (17 points)

Scenario 2: If GT and RCB lose both of their matches

    1. PBKS (19 Points) 2. MI (18 Points) 3. GT (18 points) 4. RCB (17 points)

Scenario 3: If PBKS and GT lose both of their matches

    1. RCB (21 Points), 2. MI (18 Points) 3. GT (18 Points) 4. PBKS (17 Points)
