However nice it may feel, there’s little point in a chemical or mineral sunscreen that doesn’t have broad-spectrum protection. “Broad-spectrum protection will protect against both UVA and UVB rays,” says Dr. Chang, who also recommends seeking out a minimum of SPF 30 and water-resistance. UVA rays incur some forms of skin cancer and signs of aging, like wrinkles, whereas UVB rays contribute to both sunburns and many forms of skin cancer—so it’s imperative to defend skin from both.

Also helpful are “ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which retains moisture and keeps the skin hydrated, and niacinamide, known for its anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the skin and reduce redness,” says Dr. Palm. “These ingredients are important because they address common skin issues caused by sun exposure, such as dryness and inflammation.”

Both dermatologists recommend avoiding alcohol, which can be irritating and drying, as well as fragrance, a frequent allergen.
