Earlier this month, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani announced a biopic on Dhundiraj Govind Phalke aka Dadasaheb Phalke, the Father of Indian Cinema. News was also out that Aamir Khan will be playing the titular character in the movie. But soon thereafter, SS Rajamouli also announced a biopic on the same historical personality with Jr. NTR playing Phalke.
EXCLUSIVE: Director and actor of Marathi film on Dadasaheb Phalke react on Rajkumar Hirani and SS Rajamouli announcing films on same person: “Nothing much to say except…”
These two films, however, won’t be the first ones based on the Father of Indian Cinema. Around a decade and a half ago, filmmaker Paresh Mokashi’s Marathi movie Harishchandrachi Factory (2010) released with actor Nandu Madhav playing Phalke. The film is considered iconic and it was also India’s official entry for the Oscars.
Mokashi and Madhav have exclusively shared their reactions with Bollywood Hungama on the two films announced on Phalke much after they made one. Mokashi said, “There’s nothing much to say except I support both these films! They will have their own take on the tale. Looking forward.”
Nandu Madhav pointed out that Harishchandrachi Factory was based on Phalke’s journey in making India’s first motion picture Raja Harishchandra (1913) and the two new films might not be on the same. “Harishchandrachi Factory was an autobiography on India’s first movie via Dadasaheb Phalke. But I think that the two films announced recently might be completely based on Dadasaheb’s life,” he said.
Only time will tell whether Hirani and Rajamouli’s films will tackle the same aspects of Phalke’s life. But considering their hugely different narrating styles, both films are not expected to be similar.
