Bosco Martis, one half of the popular Bollywood choreographer duo Bosco-Caesar, recently expressed his disappointment over not being acknowledged for choreographing Janhvi Kapoor’s viral song ‘Chuttamalle’ from the Telugu film Devara: Part 1. In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Bosco said, “I wish Janhvi had spoken about it (Bosco-Caesar’s involvement) in the promotions, but it’s fine.”

Choreographers often go uncredited, says Bosco

The conversation highlighted a long-standing issue in the film industry — choreographers not receiving due credit for their work. Bosco pointed out that actors publicly acknowledging choreographers during promotions makes a huge difference. “Just give credit to the choreographer. Even during promotions, if an actor talks about us. Vicky Kaushal was so graceful. He celebrated me. That’s how the world got to know I’m the choreographer,” he said, referring to Vicky’s appreciation for the song ‘Tauba Tauba’ from Bad Newz.

Bosco added, “When they talk about it, there’s a voice. The choreographers feel happy. Like when Hrithik Roshan spoke about one step we tried in Mission Kashmir in a lot of interviews, I feel happy I’m a part of his journey.”

    The challenge of getting recognition

While Bosco acknowledged that not every actor may remember to credit the choreographers, he said it’s important to create a culture where their contribution is recognised.

“If they don’t realise it, then they don’t realise it. You just do your work. The correction has to be made, but there’s a scientific way of doing it instead of forcing your way in, making that call and asking somebody why they haven’t taken your name,” he said. “There’s a protocol that needs to be set. People should get to know who the choreographer is, instead of having someone endorse it.”

Bosco also credited social media for becoming a tool for visibility. “It’s a big game-changer. Now we can post behind-the-scenes clips and show our work directly to people,” he said.

Songs they didn’t get enough credit for

Bosco also spoke about some popular tracks where he felt Bosco-Caesar’s work went underappreciated. He mentioned ‘Gallan Goodiyan’ from Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, highlighting the challenge of choreographing a large ensemble cast in a small space and in a single take. “The only dancing actors were Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, and Ranveer Singh, and that’s about it. The seasoned actor would be Anil Kapoor. Even Vikrant Massey is in there. Rest of the actors were all raw,” he recalled.

Other songs he mentioned included ‘Race Saanson Ki,’ ‘Khwab Dekhe,’ and ‘Zara Zara Touch Me’ from Race (2008), ‘Uncha Lamba Kad’ from Welcome (2007), and ‘I Hate You Like I Love You’ from Delhi Belly (2011).
