In her latest Times of India column, writer and former actor Twinkle Khanna has taken a humorous yet pointed dig at the ongoing flood of fake news and online frenzy surrounding the near-war situation between India and Pakistan. Among the many witty observations in her piece, one particular comment stood out — a fictional argument with her husband Akshay Kumar.

“I just read that you are fighting with Vicky Kaushal over who gets to make a movie on Operation Sindoor,” Khanna wrote, recalling a phone conversation with “the man of the house.” His reply: “‘It’s fake news and my leg is on fire, so I will call you later.’” She quipped, “He really should devise better excuses if he just wants to hang up.”
Her satirical tone reflects her concern over the growing blur between truth and misinformation online. From rumours about Islamabad being captured to unverified claims of nuclear attacks and malware threats, Khanna highlighted how fake news has spread faster than facts.
“Even Jesus had to wait three days to be resurrected, but Imran bhai has done it in a day and a half,” she joked, reacting to the viral and conflicting reports about former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s death and revival.
She also expressed disappointment at the targeting of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who was seen seated between Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi at a national security briefing. “Women, particularly, felt seen and represented in a country where we are often placed in a secondary position,” she wrote. But to see Misri being “threatened by trolls raging for war” felt disheartening to her.
Pointing to the contrast between real conflict and online commentary, she noted, “For all the armchair warriors with their flickering screens… war turns into yet another video of explosions and noise. At a distance.”
She wrapped up her column with a line that echoed the absurdity of both fake food and fake news. “Gandhi ji once said, ‘Fake paneer messes with your stomach and fake news with your mind, both are equally toxic.’ All right, he didn’t say it, but when everyone is passing off fiction as fact, I thought I should give it a shot as well.”
