The Indian cricket team is reeling from the sudden retirements of two of its most iconic players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, from Test cricket. This unexpected move has created a massive void in the team, leaving many to wonder who will fill their shoes.

Back on May 7, the 38-year-old Rohit hung his boots from the purest format. On May 12, it was Kohli’s turn to bid goodbye to Test cricket. Both players retired with India set to start their campaign in the 2025-27 World Test Championship with the five-match Test series in England.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly shared his thoughts on the retirements, saying, “Playing or leaving is your own decision. Both Virat and Rohit have left the game of their own free will. Both of them have had incredible careers.” While Rohit’s retirement may not be surprising, Ganguly expressed his surprise at Kohli’s decision, stating, “Yes, I am surprised.”

With Rohit Sharma’s retirement, the big question on everyone’s mind is: Who will lead India in Test cricket? Ganguly acknowledged the challenge, saying that it’s a tough decision and believed the selectors will choose the next skipper based on their deep understanding of the team’s needs and the demands of the longest format.

“The selectors will take decisions as per their understanding. A lot must be thought about in terms of captaincy. Long-term thinking. Many are talking about Jasprit Bumrah. There are concerns about his injury. We will have to think about everything together,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Indian Premier League is back in full swing. The match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru was abandoned due to rain, but the spotlight is already shifting to the IPL final, scheduled for June 3. Although Eden Gardens in Kolkata was initially set to host the final, rumours are swirling that the venue may be shifted to Ahmedabad.

Ganguly, however, remains optimistic about Kolkata hosting the final. “The final cannot be removed so easily! Efforts are underway to conduct the finals here by CAB. Nothing will be achieved by protesting and marching. Talks are ongoing with the board. CAB is having a great relationship with BCCI. Everything will be fine. I am optimistic, the final will be here,” Ganguly said.
