His odd Oscars move didn’t gum up the works of their relationship.
Adrien Brody was announced as the winner of the Oscar for Best Actor at this year’s Academy Awards — and, as far as many in the audience were concerned, he simultaneously won the award for Worst Boyfriend after he chucked his gum seven feet or so from the steps up to the stage to his longtime girlfriend Georgina Chapman before accepting the famous statuette from Cillian Murphy.
The New York Times called it “one of the strangest moments of this year’s Oscars” in an article entitled “Was That Gum He Tossed From the Oscars Stage?”
But Chapman told Page Six exclusively this week that it wasn’t how it looked — and it was all her idea.
“I asked him to do it,” she told us at the Family Equality Gala. “I saw him standing there, I could see that moment of panic on his face. He was really like, ‘Wow, I shouldn’t be having gum.’”
The fashion designer says told the actor of the gum, “Give it to me!”
“I forgot I was chewing gum, and I can’t [chew gum in a] thank you speech,” Brody said.
The Monday after the Oscars, “Live With Kelly and Mark” cohost Mark Consuelos said of the gun incident: “you can’t swallow it” because “it’s bad for you,” as Brody replied, “I could’ve! I didn’t think about that. [I just thought] I’ve got to get rid of this somehow!”
“The Brutalist” star’s acceptance speech then lasted five minutes, and he made some more headlines for refusing to get offstage when the cut-off music played.
In his speech, Brody praised Chapman — whose ex-husband is Harvey Weinstein — as an “amazing” partner who “not only reinvigorated [his] own self-worth but [his] sense of value and [his] values.”
Earlier on the red carpet at the Oscars, Brody shared a steamy kiss with Halle Berry in front of his girlfriend as a way of recreating their 2003 onstage moment.
Brody and Chapman have been publicly dating since 2020.
