NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Saturday accused the BJP-led central government of withholding education funds to the state for “petty politics“, further vowing to approach the Supreme Court against the move.Speaking at a book release event, Stalin declared, “The BJP-led Centre has halted education funds to Tamil Nadu for its petty politics.”He alleged that the central government has withheld over Rs 2,150 crore in education funds because Tamil Nadu has not agreed to the 3-language policy.Stalin further confirmed the state government will definitely move the Supreme Court against the Centre’s decision to withhold education funds. The chief minister reaffirmed DMK’s stance on education, stating their ongoing efforts to transfer education to the state list of the Constitution would persist.“If education is not shifted to the State list of the Constitution, it will be out of bounds for all,” he added.Stalin expressed confidence in winning the case, just as Tamil Nadu had succeeded earlier in the Governor case, which led to fixed timelines for the Governor and President to act on state Bills. The SC on April 8 ruling established that a Governor must give assent to a Bill if it is passed again by the state assembly after reconsideration, unless the Bill is significantly different. It also set clear timelines: one month to decide on withholding assent, three months if going against the State Cabinet’s advice, and one month to act on a Bill re-presented after review.
