Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has expressed disappointment with the way streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are operating in India today. In a recent interview with The Hindu, he shared how things have changed over the years.
Anurag Kashyap says Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others have shifted from art to mass content: “What they’re doing now is worse than television”
Anurag recalled his early work with Netflix, such as the popular crime series Sacred Games and the anthology film Lust Stories. He said these projects gave him hope. “When we did Sacred Games and Lust Stories, we thought this was an opportunity. And it seemed like an opportunity; we created some very good work with them,” he said.
However, he added that things began to change around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Now what they’re doing is worse than television. Now you go in there, and they want to dumb you down. At the end of the day, all these companies, whether it’s Netflix or Amazon or Apple, they’re coming to India because data is the new oil,” Anurag said.
He said, “They want to reach out to everyone, they don’t want to offend anyone. They don’t want to create art or cinema, they’re creating content.” According to him, these companies focus on pleasing the masses instead of encouraging strong storytelling.
Anurag also pointed out how these platforms are happy when people watch shows on their phones, rather than experiencing cinema in a more immersive way. He ended by saying that while the early days of streaming looked promising for creative filmmakers, things have now become more about business than art.
