Filmmakers Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, known for their music videos and the film Sanam Teri Kasam, recently reflected on the controversy surrounding their iconic video Kaanta Laga. They shared how the video, featuring Shefali Jariwala as a bold and rebellious young woman, sparked widespread attention at the time due to its bold visuals and styling choices.

In an interview with Hindi Rush, the filmmaker duo revealed that they faced criticism from the Central Board of Film Certification, which accused them of disturbing the nation’s moral fabric with the Kaanta Laga video. They also shared that Salman Khan had personally advised them to refrain from making such “sexy” videos.
In the interview, Vinay shared, “A big actor called us to his house, and he told us, ‘Main tumhe samjha raha hoon Radhika-Vinay, yeh jo sexy kaam hai kam kiya karo, acha nahi hota (I’m trying to make you understand, don’t do such sexy songs, it doesn’t look good)’. He just said, ‘You’ve got nice, pure minds’.” When asked to reveal the actor’s name, they confirmed it was Salman Khan.
The filmmakers shared that at the time, they had reached a creative plateau producing only light-hearted content and decided to explore a new direction, which led to the remix era.
“We were doing cute and innocent songs with Falguni Pathak. We were doing songs with ghazals with Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas. As creative people, musically we needed some change. One day, we went to Salman Khan’s house. He was exercising while listening to a Jhankaar Beats remix of a Kishore Kumar song. An idea sparked, and that’s what began the remix trend in India. We made Kaliyon Ka Chaman, Kaanta Laga, Chadti Jawani… The sound organically reminds you of a nightclub, to a sensual visualisation,” Vinay said.
Following the successful re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam, directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru are planning a sequel. While Harshvardhan Rane will return, they confirmed that Mawra Hocane will not be cast due to current India-Pakistan tensions.
