Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks have energized basketball fans in New York City with a thrilling playoff run over the past several weeks. They have thus far defeated the Detroit Pistons 4-2 in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals and moved on to face off against the NBA’s reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, in the semi-finals. The Knicks are proving skeptics wrong as they lead the series 3-1, with one game remaining to clinch a place in the Eastern Conference finals.

During the Knicks vs. Celtics game at Madison Square Garden on Monday, Jalen Brunson scored 39 points, helping his team secure another win and showing why he’s been named the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year.

Here, WWD takes a look at some of the sneakers that have helped the team captain stay on his A-game during this playoff season.

A Nike athlete, Brunson typically wears Nike Kobe sneakers on the court. For the playoffs, he’s had several pairs from the late NBA star’s signature line in his footwear rotation, including multiple pairs showing love for the WNBA.

For game four against the Celtics and game four against the Pistons, the 28-year-old point guard helped the Knicks secure pivotal wins wearing the “WNBA” Nike Kobe 6 PE sneaker, a glossy shoe awash in orange in homage to the WNBA’s signature color and Bryant’s love of the women’s league. While a “Total Orange” colorway was released to the public, this player-exclusive version features white accents.

For game two against the Celtics in Boston, when the Knicks secured a second consecutive win against one of their rivals, Brunson laced up the Kobe 6 Protro “WNBA All-Star” PE, which showcases a peach and lime green colorway. This is a sneaker that was teased last year by Vanessa Bryant and worn by Caitlin Clark.

Brunson posted the sneakers he wore in game three against the Pistons on social media, providing in the caption the name of the unreleased shoe: Kobe 5 PE “WTR.” The acronym stands for “What the Rick,” a reference to the captain’s father, Rick Brunson, a former Knick himself and a current coach for the team.

The shoes feature vibrant color blocking, with the team’s colors blue and orange featured prominently in addition to several other colors, creating a kaleidoscopic aesthetic. The younger Brunson revealed on “The Roommates Show,” the podcast he hosts alongside teammate Josh Hart and Matt Hillman, that the shoes are inspired by the teams his dad played for.

Brunson has worn several other Kobe shoes in the 10 playoff games he’s competed in so far, including the all-black Kobe 4 Protro “Gift of Mamba” and the purple and green Kobe 5 PE “The Joke’s on You.” His next sneaker look can be seen at TD garden in Boston on Wednesday for game five against the Celtics — look out for Knicks super fans in the crowd like Spike Lee (who wore Knicks gear to the Met Gala), Timothée Chalamet (who skipped the Met Gala in favor of watching one of the playoffs games) and Ben Stiller (who posted about a Knicks win during the Oscars).
