In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Thakur Anoop Singh opened up about his experience of working in the upcoming film Romeo S3, starring alongside Palak Tiwari. Singh is an Indian actor and fitness professional who began his career as a licensed pilot before transitioning into acting. His work spans television roles in series like Dwarkadheesh – Bhagwaan Shree Krishn, Chandragupta Maurya, and Akbar Birbal, as well as films including Commando 2 (2017), Yajamana (2019), and the Surya-starrer Singham 3. In 2024, he portrayed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in a Marathi historical film, followed by a major role as the antagonist in the 2025 action film Romeo S3. He is also a bodybuilding titleholder, having won Mr. India, Mr. Asia, and Mr. World in 2015 at the WBPF World Championship.
EXCLUSIVE: Thakur Anoop Singh on his upcoming film Romeo S3: “The film stands apart for its fresh pairing and action”
Can you tell us about your character, DCP Sangram Singh Shekhawat?
He is a special investigative officer at the same time who is assigned a case to counter a drug cartel based in Goa. He also has a backstory with the drug cartel’s past deals. Woh investigate karte karte pata chalta hai unko (While investigating, he finds out certain things)—that is one. Another is how he gets to the gang of the cartel to actually expose them—that is another interesting story.
So, I’m also playing a drug peddler in the film; that’s the second character I’m playing. So basically, he’s an undercover agent, and it’s about how he exposes the underworld of drug cartels in Goa and how he solves the entire case. This is the story, and it has a very interesting approach to it. Kaafi entertaining film hai. (It’s a very entertaining film.)
Mainstream Bollywood has seen quite a few cop movies in the last decade and a half. How does Romeo S3 stand apart from other such films?
It stands apart for its fresh pairing, stands apart for its action. We are getting different combinations. Legendary action director Tinu Verma ji is directing all the action sequences. He is known for his action in films like Khuda Gawah, Gadar, Gadar 2, and many other films with Sunny Deol and others. So, when you have a technician like that on board, and also the director Mr. Guddu Dhanoa ji, that is also a fairly different and new combination. Guddu sir is known for his amazing films Bichhoo, Ziddi, and all the hardcore action films, which are emotional to dramatic.
Also, the film is produced by Dr. Jayantilal Gada, the person behind launching me and including me in this film Romeo S3. I would not have been in it if I had not been doing the film. All the credit goes to Jayantilal Gada.
So, talking about the film—also the storyline and how the character is unfolding the story to its perfect stage—is a very fresh approach. Ultimately, it’s a cop story: thrilling and something very fresh. The audience will enjoy it because there is action, emotion, and a kind of drama in the film.
The film marks the comeback of director Guddu Dhanoa. How was it working with a veteran like him and how did he handle the film?
I consider Guddu sir very lucky for debutants because he launched Shah Rukh Khan sir in Deewana at that time. He was also the director for Diljit Dosanjh when he debuted in The Lion of Punjab, and now he is launching me in his film as a director. So, I feel he is very lucky for the actors.
And secondly, because of his body of work—he is also a cousin brother of Shri Dharmendra sir and uncle to nephews, actors Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol. So, he comes from that lineage of the Deol family and the work they have done.
Initially, I was a little bit stressed about how I would be able to work with him, but once you’re prepared—my preparation was very strong—Guddu sir was convinced. The best part about Guddu sir is that woh dubbing ke liye aate hain, hair consultation ke liye bhi aate hain, hair ke looks mein kuch change karna hai, meri transformation bhi mujhe karni hai, meri mooche bhi kitni honi chahiye uske liye bhi woh hote hain (he comes for dubbing, for hair consultation too; if there’s any change to be made in the hairstyle, even for my transformation or deciding the length of my moustache—he is present for all of it). He is sitting and he is watching. That is a very rare quality.
Usually, what happens is that the direction and production team sends the actor to the hair salon. Yahan aisa nahin hua. (That didn’t happen here.) Guddu sir was sitting next to me, seeing my entire hairstyle change, getting me into the look of DCP Sangram Singh Shekhawat. This kind of involvement and dedication—which is rare—woh pata chalta hai. (It becomes evident.) With such directional involvement for an actor, the actor automatically shines.
Did you take any training for the action and stunts?
I’m very much trained in martial arts and taekwondo as such. For the past 2–5 years, I’ve been a taekwondo martial artist and also a trained gymnast. So, I combined gymnastics and taekwondo together for this. There are so many kicks I’ve practiced—around 500–2000 times in the past three-four years. Every session of taekwondo I had to perform 500 kicks with the same accuracy every time. You practice 500 times for that one proper shot in the film. I was prepared for it, and I enjoyed it, but I did it more as an investment in my personal life, it was not for the movie. I did it because I am a huge guy in terms of size. I am almost 96 kilos of muscle. It was difficult for a guy of my weight and muscularity to do stunts initially, but I did it continuously, which gave me the flexibility for it. This is something you’ll be able to see in the film as well. So, what I learned in the past few years came in use for me in this film.
What was your biggest challenge while doing this film?
When you are prepared for an exam, all the questions become easy for you. No question is a challenge at that time. So, the preparation was rock solid. Six months of pre-planning went into the film. Everybody was, you know—that’s why—you won’t believe it, action films usually take around 70–80 days to complete. We finished ours in 33 days. So, that shows how ready we were with respect to our work. There was nothing—there was no challenge as such. It was very smooth. It happened quickly. It was like, “Kitna jaldi ho gaya yaar yeh.” (How quickly this happened, man.)
How was it working with Palak Tiwari?
She’s fun, she’s entertaining, she’s very bubblish. She’s exactly like how her character in the film is. She is the daughter of an established TV star, but still through her hard work she has her own name. I like the simplicity of hers. And even in the film she has done a very good job, she looks very good in the film. I’m very happy, we shared a very good chemistry on screen.
The film is all set to release on Friday. How much are you thinking about the box office and does that make you anxious?
I’m not, I’m absolutely not, it’s not my job, it’s not my cup of tea to even anticipate the box office collections. All I want is people clapping. Because see, I am a complete outsider, who’s worked one project at a time and come this far. I started at television, did about 15 shows, went down south, got experience from 15 other films, came to Bombay, became a hero in a Hindi film now. So, in the last 10 years, I have a vast amount of love received from the people. All I know is I’ve worked with utmost honesty, I have given my heart and soul to this character, and it is for the audience to decide how well it is, and we’ll see.
