Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has spoken out in defence of Bollywood personalities often criticised for their silence on socio-political matters. In a recent appearance on senior advocate Kapil Sibal’s YouTube channel, Akhtar said that the fear of state action is one of the key reasons why actors and filmmakers avoid taking a stand against the establishment.

Drawing a contrast between India and the United States, Akhtar noted how Hollywood actors, including Meryl Streep, have publicly criticised their government without facing institutional backlash. “Meryl Streep gave a statement [against the US government], but there was no income tax raid on her,” he said. “Whether this insecurity is real or not, I don’t want to get into that debate. But the perception exists.”

Akhtar added that the fear of action from government agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), or income tax authorities can be a strong deterrent. “If this fear is in one’s heart, then they will worry… that their files will be opened and they’ll be investigated,” he explained. He also made it clear that such apprehensions are not exclusive to the film industry. “They may be in the industry, but they live in the same society. They operate like ordinary people,” he said, underlining that showbiz professionals are not insulated from the broader socio-political climate. “There’s just more dhoom-dhaam in this profession,” he added, referring to the glamour associated with the film world.

Akhtar acknowledged that he may be among the few from the industry who have consistently spoken up, but reiterated that he empathises with those who choose to stay quiet. “I might be one of the few voices speaking up, but I understand why others might not,” he said.

Akhtar has previously voiced concerns on various national issues and is known for his outspoken political views. His latest remarks come amid ongoing discussions around freedom of speech and the perceived atmosphere of fear among public figures in India.
