The spring High Point Market draws thousands of interior designers, buyers and furnishings makers to the city of High Point, N.C., each spring and fall to see the latest looks in home design. The latest edition of the show gave visitors a look at the trends that will shape interiors over the coming seasons.

Here are five of the key ones:

    New Traditions

Home design has ridden a wave of nostalgia for a few seasons as people long for the comfort and stability of times gone by. This market, that sentiment led to a resurgence of traditional furniture styles, albeit with an updated approach.

At Century Furniture, designer Thomas O’Brien tapped his family history to design a traditional-style four-poster bed with turned spindle details. But the piece has a current feel thanks to an upholstered headboard and a soft putty finish that gives the bed a lighter look than traditional dark wood.

“It was in the family lake house he grew up going to,” said Alexa Keaney Smith, director of marketing at Century. “He has the original, and this is an almost-exact replica of it.”

Want a more traditional vibe? The bed comes in a choice of 90 finishes and multiple upholstery styles.

Designer Alexa Hampton went traditional for her new Marlborough collection for Theodore Alexander, with khaya swirl mahogany wood, brass inlays and hardware, and upholstery like Italian mohair in a palette of rich on-trend reds and cream.

“My belief is that good design is comprised of canonical moments. The design canon is made up of moments that we know and recognize as timeless — this includes Louis XVI pieces, Biedermeier, French modern from the ‘30s and ‘40s, Napoleon III, neoclassicism, Anglo-Indian design, ancient Chinese designs, notably among others,” Hampton said. “My hope for the Marlborough collection is that it will function like a main artery through my line of furniture that will connect the eclectic moments to others. It is connective tissue. It’s handsome, tailored, rectilinear and classic.”

    Colorful Outdoor Weaves

Woven furniture has long been a staple for outdoor spaces, and this market, those weaves got a shot of eye-catching color.

Known for its weather-resistant woven furnishings, Dedon introduced its Fllair collection in a white-and-blue (called Lagoon) weave. The look included a teak-topped table with a fully woven base.

“It will be available in four different colors, so if somebody’s not interested in the bright blue, they can get a muted yellow or neutrals,” said Nicole Ciminera, the firm’s director of marketing.

Multicolor weaves showed up at Janus et Cie in the Orchid lounge chair, which featured a chevron pattern in palladium and limestone, and at Summer Classics in its Bari armchair, also in a chevron weave in white and chambray.

Ngala Trading — which partners with African artisans to create custom handmade furnishings — brought fully woven outdoor dining in vibrant combos of orange, yellow, olive green and brown. The pieces are made with a recycled material called Fibrecane hand-woven over powder-coated stainless steel frames.

“The artisans use traditional African basketwork techniques on the recyclable material to make a more modern weave,” said Lawson Ricketts, creative director at Ngala Trading.

    Different Takes on Wood

With the continuing shift toward more organic forms and nature-inspired interiors, furniture makers have gotten more creative with their use of wood, eschewing typical finishes for techniques that enhance its natural beauty.

Bernhardt Furniture used the ancient Japanese technique shou sugi ban to create statement-making accent tables. The process involves charring the wood’s surface to create a water-resistant finish.

“The technique creates balance and beauty while also protecting the wood,” said Heather Eidenmiller, Bernhardt’s director of brand development.

Century launched petrified wood dining and occasional tables with live edges and a variegated wood grain in shades of brown, black and tan. At Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, the natural curves of tree roots created a base for the glass-topped Tremont table.

“They cut and slice these huge teak roots, and people really like the organic shapes,” Gold said.

For their new collaboration with designer Dwayne Bergmann, Abner Henry manipulated hardwood to bring the dramatic curves of the Roma collection to life. The curved wood design challenged the Abner Henry team both on a creative and technical level.

“We pushed the boundaries with high-definition colors, curved hardwoods and artisan metalwork,” said LaVern Hershberger, president and creative director at Abner Henry. “Some of the curves were so complex that we developed an entirely new technique for curved hardwood construction.”

    Statement Seating

From high-back chairs to oversized modular sectionals, seating that makes a statement — not only for its size but also its design — filled showrooms all over High Point.

Adriana Hoyos welcomed visitors to her showroom with a pair of of high-back, leather-upholstered chairs inspired by luxury car design.

“I wanted these to be oversized because I’m an interior designer, and often when I’m selecting furniture for luxury homes, it’s hard to find this type of piece for the foyer or bedroom,” Hoyos said. “It has a sculptural silhouette, but it’s also very comfortable.”

Eichholtz’s Sebastian sofa and oversized swivel chair offered plush upholstered seating encased in a high-gloss eucalyptus veneer frame. “The design was inspired by the built-ins on luxury ocean liners of the 1940s and 1950s,” said Alyssa Zimerman, industry relations consultant at Eichholtz.

The Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams showroom showed generously curved sectionals, updated club chairs in richly textured fabrics and bold pieces such as the Illio sofa upholstered in an eye-popping modern abstract pattern.

“My designer and I were in Palm Springs looking at vintage American midcentury modern, and we came across this Italian midcentury modern furniture,” Gold says. “I was like, ‘I love the idea of Italian midcentury modern, but Americanizing it for us.’ So we made it more comfortable.”

    Feminine Touches

From gently undulating sofa bases at Worlds Away that recalled the ripples of a skirt to soft blush finishes at Brown Jordan, a sense of femininity permeated many designs.

Florals expanded beyond the realm of fabrics, showing up in hardware, such as the blooming flower in cast brass on the door pull of Currey & Company’s Briallen vanity, which evoked the elegance of a beautiful brooch.

Theodore Alexander crafted delicate buds of brass for the door pulls of its Bouquet cabinet, which featured a distinctive floral pattern in the wood.

Eichholtz’s Solange chandelier cast a rosy glow thanks to the handmade pink glass pieces that recalled curling flower petals.

“Our designer discovered a piece at a Parisian flea market made with Depression glass,” Zimerman said. “He loved that peachy pink tone and decided to interpret it as a chandelier.”
