Nearly two months ago, Anurag Kashyap blasted the Indian team of the streaming giant Netflix, alleging that they would have never greenlit a show like Adolescence. It led to a lot of debate and discussion among creators and actors. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Amit Sadh and Jim Sarbh during the promotions of Pune Highway, and we asked them about this issue.

EXCLUSIVE: Amit Sadh, Jim Sarbh react to Anurag Kashyap’s Netflix criticism: “No point complaining…believe in your project”; Amit confesses he was MOCKED for doing OTT before it became cool

Amit Sadh said, “First of all, there’s no lack of creativity and intent in our industry and our country. It’s an injustice to all the great filmmakers and artists in India who are pushing the envelope and also for the commercial works that are working. Who am I or you to undermine something that is successful or is being loved? Adolescence was made by a group of people in a particular market and it has been accepted. But Jim’s Rocket Boys also went to the Emmys. In short, we are making great content. Some of it doesn’t excite the audience. But you can’t say that we lack in intent or craft or that we are making bad stuff. That’s not true.”

Jim Sarbh remarked, “There’s (an Indian) film, Sabar Bonda, which won another prize, this time at a Ukrainian film festival. I think there’s no point in spending your life complaining. I think it’s better to act in ways that you can and make the kinds of films that you are interested in doing. There are people who’ll produce. I don’t think the makers of Pune Highway ever imagined when they wrote the play that we would be here. I didn’t imagine when we shot the film that it would get a theatrical release. Yet, it’s all happening. Hence, believe in your project. Believe in your voice and the story you want to tell. Go out there, make it and put it out and see what happens.”

Amit Sadh, interestingly, has been the OG OTT star, having worked in Breathe. The Amazon Prime Video show arrived much before Sacred Games, the show that took the Indian OTT market to another level. On this, Amit Sadh confessed that many looked down upon him at that point, “Some people used to mock me saying, ‘Arre, yeh web series kar raha hai’. And then the OTT space just took off.”

Pune Highway releases on May 16 and for Amit Sadh, it is significant as its first theatrical release in years, the last being Gold (2018). He was also seen in Sukhee (2023), though it featured him in a cameo. Amit said, “Yes, it is exciting. We did good work on OTT. But with a theatrical release, you can boast that ‘Picture aa rahi hai cinema hall mein’!”
