Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is enjoying a productive run as an actor, taking on antagonist and supporting roles in several films, including the Tamil hit Maharaja starring Vijay Sethupathi. He recently shared that his involvement in the film was essential to him, as he wanted to fund his daughter Aaliyah’s wedding.

During a session at The Huddle by The Hindu, Anurag Kashyap discussed his acting roles in South Indian films. He shared that he had turned down many South film offers after Imaikka Nodigal, but while working on the post-production of Kennedy, he kept running into Vijay Sethupathi. “After Imaikka Nodigal, I turned down a lot of South films. Offers kept coming every other day. Then, during post-production for Kennedy, I kept bumping into Vijay Sethupathi at my neighbour’s place. He told me there’s this amazing script they’ve been trying to get to me. I initially said no. But he helped me find something in Kennedy, so I gave him a ‘Thank You’ card in the film,” said the filmmaker.
Anurag Kashyap revealed that he discussed the expenses of his daughter Aaliyah’s wedding with Vijay Sethupathi, and the actor helped him secure a role. “I told him, ‘I need to get my daughter married next year, and I don’t think I can afford it.’ And Vijay said, ‘We’ll help you.’ And that’s how Maharaja happened,” Anurag shared.
Maharaja, directed by Nithilan Saminathan, released in June 2024. Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, and others, it explores the complexities of father-daughter relationships.
Anurag Kashyap’s daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, a content creator and YouTuber, married her longtime partner Shane Gregoire in December 2024 in Mumbai. The wedding reception was attended by several celebrities, including Naga Chaitanya, Sobhita Dhulipala, Abhishek Bachchan, Agastya Nanda, Suhana Khan, Mihir Ahuja, Orhan Awatramani (Orry), Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bobby Deol, and Kalki Koechlin.
