Exclusive | Keith McNally has more to say on James Corden: ‘I dislike anyone who shoves their power and status down your throat, not just celebs’

    Keith McNally can’t shut up.

Despite having suffered a 2016 stroke that left him partially paralyzed and with speech difficulties, the man behind some of NYC’s greatest eateries, from Balthazar to Pastis, is still the most outspoken restaurateur in the city. (Although he detests that label. “Does a plumber call himself a plombier?” he writes in “I Regret Almost Everything,” his new memoir. “Trust the French to come up with the most pretentious word in the dictionary.”)

He is famously mischievous — discovering it made him “intoxicated with power,” he writes — on Instagram, where he has 153K followers, calling out ill-behaved celebrities and rude non-famous patrons alike.

He’s called a photo of Kim and Khloé Kardashian and Lauren Sánchez “repulsive beyond” and deemed Sánchez and billionaire fiancé Jeff Bezos “absolutely revolting.” (Despite this, he told us, “If Lauren Sánchez wants to have her wedding party at Balthazar, I’m all for it.”)

But most notoriously, in October 2022, McNally — who admits that he often gets into “so much trouble” — posted that James Corden was “the most abusive customer” to Balthazar servers “since the restaurant opened 25 years ago.” He called the former late-night host “nasty” when he allegedly sent back an omelet and “began yelling like crazy to the server: ‘You can’t do your job! You can’t do your job!”

McNally told Page Six: “Two hours after the post came out, Corden began bombarding me with texts and calls. He sounded so desperate I almost regret posting about the episode. [But] I dislike anyone who shoves their power and status down your throat, not just celebrities.”

Still, he admits that he can sometimes type without thinking through the consequences.

“My nephew and three of my children have each gotten angry with me for something I posted,” McNally revealed. “They were probably justified.”

That hasn’t stopped many, many A-listers from loving him. Photographs from two recent Balthazar parties for “I Regret Almost Everything” show McNally being celebrated by Anna Wintour, Christy Turlington, Woody Allen and wife Soon-Yi Previn, Diane Sawyer, Griffin Dunne, Richard E. Grant (who also voices McNally’s audiobook), Padma Lakshmi, Alec Baldwin, Eric Ripert and John Leguizamo.

In his extremely candid memoir, McNally, 73, talks about everything from his failed marriages to being sued for sexual harassment, gay love affairs to his health.

He lost the permanent use of his right hand, right arm and right leg after suffering a stroke on the left side of his brain while in London in November 2016. He has said that “my speech was so slurred I sounded like a stage drunk.”

Despite calling her “revolting,” McNally said he would be more than happy to hold one of Lauren Sánchez’s wedding parties at Balthazar. FilmMagic

The book opens with McNally revealing that he tried to kill himself in 2018 while in the throes of a deep depression — swallowing 33 Ambien and 15 Percocets in under two minutes while at his summer house on Martha’s Vineyard.

“I remember thinking how easy it was. Being a natural coward I expected to be a lot more hesitant,” he told Page Six.

Recounting that moment for the book was difficult. But, he said, “It wasn’t as hard writing about my suicide attempt as it was writing about my 15 year-old son finding me unconscious.”

After his son George discovered him, McNally was rushed to a hospital, where he “surfaced” 14 hours later — and eventually transferred to McLean, a psychiatric hospital near Boston, for two months.

“I’d carefully planned for a friend to find my body the morning after,” he said. “But my son George woke uncharacteristically early that day and discovered me unconscious.

“I’ve felt tremendously guilty ever since.”

McNally and his second wife, Alina, had recently told their children, George and Alice (now 21 and 20, respectively), they were divorcing. It was that, coupled with hideous back pain, that made him want to end it all.

Was he serious about taking his life? “Of course I intended to kill myself,” he said.

“I read somewhere that people who talk endlessly about killing themselves never do. Conversely, those who truly want to commit suicide never talk about it beforehand. I never said a word to anyone about it.”

McNally, who also owns Minetta Tavern and Morandi, writes at length about his relationships with his children. He has five in total, including Harry, 40, Sophie, 39, and Isabelle, 36, whom he shares with first wife Lynn Wagenknecht, with whom he founded The Odeon.

“Relationships within families are always tricky and seldom stable for long,” he said, “As a parent, you’re never out of the woods with your own children. Not even when you’re dead. In trying to avoid the mistakes your parents’ made you inadvertently make others. At least I did and continue to do so.”

McNally added: “Each of my kids has read the book and though they never gushed about it, I believe they quite liked it. Sophie, my oldest daughter, probably likes it best. Alina hasn’t read it.”

McNally is good pals with Anna Wintour, who was an early fan of The Odeon.

Alina, who was wed to McNally for 15 years, does not come out as the most supportive character, as McNally claims in the book that she did not like being around his oldest children and grew weary of his health woes.

“Alina was amazingly sympathetic when I first suffered a stroke,” he told Page Six. “Unfortunately, by the time I tried to commit suicide, she had ‘checked out’ of our relationship and I couldn’t blame her.

“Committing suicide, or trying to, can be a profoundly selfish act, which I can believe mine was. I also think Alina was as affected by my stroke as I was. Or almost.”

The pair no longer speak, he said, adding: “I still love my ex-wife and would do anything to be friends with her.”

He remains close to Lynn, who now runs The Odeon and who rushed to his side with son Harry after the suicide attempt. Still, he said, “I probably feel closer to her than she does to me.”

McNally is also open about how his own impoverished upbringing in the post-war East End of London with mom Joyce, whom he describes as eternally hoping for a better class of life, and dad Jack, a docker and amateur boxer, shaped him.

McNally has remained a staunch supporter of director Woody Allen, who turned up to the book launch. They’re seen with actor Richard E. Grant, who narrates the audio version of McNally’s book. Keith McNally/ Instagram

After leaving school aged 16, he fell into acting — and embarked on a relationship with renowned British playwright Alan Bennett (“The Madness of King George III” and “The History Boys”), who is 18 years older, while appearing in his play “Forty Years On” in London’s West End. (McNally writes that he has had two homosexual relationships in his life.)

“Alan absolutely hated me writing about our relationship”, McNally confessed of the playwright, with whom he had remained close friends. “Surprisingly, I got more of a backlash from Alan than any of my children.

“My kids thought nothing of it. My older ones — who are very close to Alan — probably think I didn’t deserve my relationship with Alan.”

Ironically, McNally credits Bennett, who has been an investor in several of his restaurants, with helping shape the book.

Keith McNally’s “I Regret Almost Everything: A Memoir” is out now.

“The idea to write about my suicide attempt and events leading up to it actually came from Alan,” he said. “So it’s weird that he ended up being more pissed off than anyone by my memoir, especially as I’ve nothing but praise for him in the book.”

But McNally may be his own worst critic.

“The behavior that has disgusted me the most at Balthazar wasn’t a customer’s, but my own,” he said. “I fired someone I didn’t like 25 years ago, because a manager accused him of stealing. There wasn’t sufficient evidence to fire the guy, but because I didn’t like him, I went ahead and did the deed. I’ve felt terrible about this ever since.”

Speaking seriously, he said, life is pretty good now.

“For a man who’s half-paralyzed, I get along just dandy,” he told Page Six. “Even before my stroke, my mental health was never at an even keel.  And nor would I want it to be. Luckily, I receive enormous pleasure from the people I work with … Even though it’s occasionally hard work, I get the deepest pleasure from my children.”

And McNally — who said that, of all his restaurants, it’s Morandi he orders in from once a week — joked that he wants to be remembered for one thing: “As someone who raised Balthazar’s lunch special by [just] a dollar.”
