Suchitra was born on April 6, 1931, in Pabna, located in Bangladesh. She made her debut in the Bengali movie industry with the movie, Sesh Kothay back in 1952 and then created a household name for herself. Suchitra had done an array of Bengali movies before making her transition into the Hindi film industry. She did more than 30 movies next to stars like Uttam Kumar. Her movies, apart from Devdas, include Bambai Ka Babu (1960), Mamta (1966) and Aandhi (1975).
Suchitra’s pairing with Uttam Kumar was one of the most iconic on the movie screen. They were known to have done movies like Aandhi, Datta, and until 1975 she retired. Suchitra was one of the top stars. It was in 1963 when she won the Best Actress award at the Moscow International Film Festival for her role in the Bengali movie, Saat Pake Bandha. Suchitra had a lot of success in the movie industry, but she withdrew from movies after Pranay Pasha, 1978. The film failed commercially, and then she retired from the public eye.
Suchitra Sen’s husband, Dibanath Sen was an alcoholic
Suchitra got married at a very young age and got a lot of support from Dibanath and her in-laws when she started off her career. Her personal life had a setback when she became famous, and then she distanced herself from her family, that also led to troubles in her married life. Her husband had a drinking issue and then left her to go to the US. He passed away in 1970.
Over a period of time, Suchitra became distant from the movie industry, and for the next 36 years, she lived in seclusion. The late veteran actress was cut off from the outside world and lived in a single room. A report by India.com revealed that she did not like to see anyone and would also hide her face when she went outdoors. It was in 2014 when Suchitra passed away at 83 after captivating the hearts of millions.
