A 12-year-old boy died of electrocution while playing in an open ground in Hyderabad. According to the authorities, the victim, identified as Mohammad Malik, came in contact with an electric pole while playing with friends at the MS Maqta Eidgah Ground in Khairatabad area on Wednesday.

Although people rushed to help him, he had suffered a fatal electric shock, and was declared dead shortly after.

The boy’s sudden death left the local community in shock and triggered public anger over poorly maintained power supply infrastructure in the area, with residents expressing concern about safety in public spaces.

“This is heartbreaking. Children go out to play, and something like this happens. It’s unacceptable,” a local resident said. Locals demanded urgent inspection of public areas, especially open grounds and fixing hazardous conditions.

Authorities have registered a case and confirmed an investigation is underway into how an exposed electric pole was allowed to pose a risk in a public area.

In March this year, a woman died of electrocution after she came in contact with an electrified moped in Kamareddy district. Her husband had set up the moped with a charge to prevent theft of petrol from the two-wheeler.

Similarly, in October 2024, a 23-year-old man in Kamareddy district was electrocuted to death in his sleep. While sleeping, he had come in contact with a live wire which was placed near his bed to charge his mobile phone.
